MArch Architecture

At Sheffield, the MArch is designed to give you hands-on, real-world experience from the very start. Through the programme’s celebrated Live Projects, you’ll work in groups with real clients — from community groups to local organisations — tackling genuine design challenges. This experience helps you develop skills in briefing, consultation, sustainability strategies, and collaborative problem-solving. You’ll also make full use of the School’s studios and workshops, turning your ideas into tangible models and digital designs.

Some of the key resources and experiences you’ll benefit from include:

• Dedicated design studios with drawing boards, collaborative spaces, and supportive peer environments

• High-spec computer suites with industry-standard and specialist software integrated into studio work

• The Media Unit, offering a photography studio, digital design workstations, and equipment for environmental surveys

• Print and Make Workshop with 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, casting facilities, and other fabrication tools

• The Live Projects programme, giving you direct experience with client-led design-build and community-focused projects

• Research-led thematic studios, allowing you to explore contextual design, heritage, innovation, or technical themes

• Opportunities to showcase work in the summer exhibition, connecting with the architecture community and building your portfolio

• Engagement with the Urban Room / Live Works, where architecture meets social activism and participatory design

Graduates of the MArch often move into professional roles such as Project Architect, Design Architect, Urban Designer, or Sustainability Consultant, with strong preparation for both practice and research. Because the degree is RIBA Part 2-accredited and ARB-prescribed, it’s a key step toward becoming a fully qualified architect.
