Architectural Design MArch

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University College London

Program Overview

The Architectural Design MArch at UCL’s Bartlett School is an exciting, one-year program that blends architecture with cutting-edge technology like AI, robotics, and computational design. It’s perfect for creative thinkers who want to push boundaries and explore bold, research-driven design ideas.

 Curriculum Structure

Across the year, you’ll engage in three interconnected strands: Design, Theory, and Digital Skills. The heart of the program is your year-long Design Thesis Project, where you explore a personal research question through innovative design. Alongside this, the Theory strand guides you to write a 10,000-word Design Thesis Report, while Digital Skills workshops help you master tools like generative design and robotic fabrication. Early modules like Architectural Design: Historical, Cultural and Theoretical Skills give a solid foundation, and by the end of the year, your Final Design Thesis showcases your research, creativity, and technical expertise.

Focus Areas

Advanced computational design, generative design, AI in architecture, robotics and fabrication, extended reality, and innovative materials.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, you’ll be able to develop and execute ambitious design research, integrate cutting-edge technology with architectural theory, lead technical innovation, and produce a professional, well-researched thesis.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This degree gives you an MArch in Architectural Design from UCL. While it’s not a Part 2 professional qualification, it equips you with the skills for advanced research, design innovation, and tech-focused roles in architecture.

Reputation & Employability

  • The Bartlett School of Architecture is ranked #1 in the world for Architecture & Built Environment by QS 2025.
  • It’s also #1 in The Guardian 2026 for Architecture, Construction, and Planning.
  • Graduates often go on to work at top firms like Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, ARUP, and other leading design studios.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the Architectural Design MArch at UCL, learning is hands-on and highly practical. You’ll spend most of your time in studios, making models, experimenting with advanced technologies, and turning your design ideas into real-world outcomes. The Bartlett provides expert technical staff, dedicated workshops, and digital labs to support your creativity and experimentation. Students often work in teams, join research clusters, and explore both traditional craft and cutting-edge computational tools.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience:

  • Work in design studios at the Bartlett’s Gordon Street campus, offering a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Use the B‑made workshop to prototype at full scale with CNC machines, 3D printers, and other fabrication tools.
  • Explore digital design in B‑media labs, which provide hardware and software for extended reality, video, audio, simulation, and interactive design.
  • Experiment with advanced fabrication and robotics at Here East, where large-scale prototyping and robotics facilities are available.
  • Test architectural models using a sophisticated lighting simulator, replicating natural light conditions for design evaluation.
  • Access the Bartlett Library, housing tens of thousands of architecture-focused volumes, alongside UCL’s broader library resources.
  • Participate in annual field trips, connecting your studio research to real-world architectural contexts and global design practices.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the Architectural Design MArch are ready to step into a wide range of innovative careers, from speculative architecture and design research to creative technology and academia. Typical roles include Architect, Design Researcher, Computational Designer / Digital Fabrication Specialist, and Creative Technologist. Many Bartlett graduates secure work or further study within 15 months of completing the program.

Here’s how UCL and The Bartlett help you succeed:

  • Career Support: UCL Careers provides one-on-one guidance for up to three years after graduation, plus workshops, alumni networking, and industry events tailored for Built Environment students.
  • Strong Employment Outcomes: A high percentage of Bartlett graduates move quickly into roles or further studies, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness.
  • Top Employers & Partnerships: Graduates often join leading firms such as Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, ARUP, and other top studios, reflecting the program’s strong connections with industry.
  • Long-Term Value: While this MArch is research- and design-focused rather than a Part 2 professional qualification, it equips you with deep technical, theoretical, and computational expertise — a solid foundation for specialized and high-impact roles.
  • Global Reach: Bartlett alumni work across more than 50 countries, showing how internationally relevant and mobile this qualification is.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing this MArch, students can pursue PhDs at The Bartlett or other top institutions, focusing on areas such as computational design, robotics in architecture, or urban research. Others take up academic positions, become design researchers, or join specialized institutes exploring emerging architectural technologies.
