Program Overview

The Architecture & Historic Urban Environments MA at UCL explores how we can learn from the past to shape more equitable cities. It blends design, research, and theory, making it perfect for architects, urban designers, heritage professionals, and creative thinkers who want to work with historic spaces and urban environments.

Curriculum Structure

This one-year master’s is hands-on and immersive. You’ll start with Design Practice for Historic Environments and Issues in Historic Urban Environments, learning to critically analyze and reimagine historic spaces. Mid-year, Design Research Methods equips you with surveying, mapping, and archival research skills. The year concludes with a Final Project, where you apply your design and research to propose meaningful interventions in real-world urban contexts. Optional modules and fieldwork trips broaden your perspective and practical experience.

Focus Areas

Heritage-led design, urban regeneration, spatial and environmental justice, surveying and mapping historic cities.

Learning Outcomes
