Program Overview

The MArch (Hons) Architecture at the University of Bath is a 2‑year, full-time program that prepares you for a professional career in architecture. You’ll develop your design skills through challenging studio projects, explore urban and sustainable design, and gain hands-on experience in real architectural practice.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
The first year introduces you to professional practice through a placement and advanced design studios. You’ll tackle urban-scale projects, study history and theory, and explore sustainable design approaches, blending creativity with real-world architectural challenges.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll focus on self-directed and research-intensive projects. You’ll complete a major individual design project, collaborate on group masterplans, and produce a research paper, integrating design, theory, and technical knowledge to prepare for professional practice.

At the University of Bath, the MArch programme is designed to give you hands-on experience from day one. You’ll spend time on a professional placement, gaining firsthand insight into how architectural practices operate, while on campus you’ll develop your skills in dedicated design studios with guidance from both academic staff and practising architects. The programme combines studio work, workshops, labs, and field trips, so you’re constantly applying your learning in practical, real-world contexts.

Semester-long professional placement in an architectural practice.

Specializing further with master’s programs in urban design, heritage conservation, or building performance engineering, depending on your interests

Additional Information & Requirements

You should have a bachelor’s honours degree, typically a high 2:1 or above with clear evidence of excellence in design studio
To apply for this course, you must have an undergraduate degree in architecture validated for ARB/RIBA Part 1 or equivalent
You'll need to provide a sample of work, around 30 sides A3, demonstrating a strong aptitude for architectural design
You should submit your sample via the online system; it should be no more than 50 MB
You'll also need to provide a statement (500 word maximum) on the application: this should demonstrate why you have chosen Bath University
The Department usually asks applicants to have 9 months (or more) work experience in architectural practice post graduation before enrolling on the MArch programme
If your first language is not English, you may be exempt from our English language requirements if you completed your degree in the UK within the last 2 years
IELTS: 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in all components, TOEFL IBT: 100 overall with a minimum 24 in all 4 components
For India: Indian applicants would need a bachelor’s degree that is considered equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s (honours) architecture degree, especially one that matches ARB/RIBA Part 1 equivalence
For USA: Bath states that U.S. applicants should have anHonours bachelor’s degree or bachelor’s degree with a final overall result of at least CGPA 2.7–3.0 (on a 4-point scale)
