MA in Architecture and Architecture International (RIBA Part 2)

3 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Huddersfield

Program Overview

The MA in Architecture and Architecture International (RIBA Part 2) is designed for students who already have an architectural background and want to take the next step toward becoming a fully qualified architect. It builds your design confidence, deepens your theoretical understanding, and prepares you for the realities of professional practice in a rapidly changing global industry.

Curriculum Structure

Across the three years, the programme blends professional experience, advanced design studio work, theory, technology and research. In the early phase you consolidate your skills, reflect on architectural practice and prepare for the creative and technical challenges ahead. Later, you work on complex design briefs, study architectural theory and urbanism, and explore advanced materials and digital technologies. The final phase focuses on a major project — a design thesis or research dissertation — supported by study in professional law, management and practice.

Focus areas: urban design · architectural theory · sustainability · advanced construction and digital technologies · practice management

Learning outcomes: advanced architectural design · strong theoretical positioning · sustainable and technology-aware practice · professional preparedness · confidence for further research

Professional alignment (accreditation): The programme is accredited at RIBA Part 2 and gives exemption from the ARB Part 2 examination, forming a major step toward full professional architect registration in the UK.

Reputation (employability rankings): Architecture at Huddersfield enjoys strong professional credibility thanks to its RIBA-accredited pathway, and graduates have an excellent track record of moving into architectural practice, consultancy and doctoral research.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes this RIBA Part 2 programme stand out is how much you learn by doing. Instead of simply studying theory, you’ll spend most of your time in studios, workshops and digital labs, working on real design briefs the way professional architects do. You’ll experiment with materials, models and visualisation tools, collaborate with peers and tutors, and constantly develop your own design voice through hands-on practice.

The facilities and learning experiences are genuinely immersive and built around creativity and experimentation, including:

  • Purpose-built design studios inside the Barbara Hepworth Building, giving you bright, flexible spaces to sketch, build, discuss and present your work.

  • Access to advanced equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters and virtual-reality visualisation tools to bring your ideas to life and test them quickly.

  • Group studio projects that mirror professional practice, taking you from concept and site analysis all the way to final presentation and critique.

  • Opportunities to link your studio work with active research through centres focused on sustainability, urban design and architectural practice.

  • Specialist digital and fabrication labs, along with photography and film studios, to help you communicate your designs with real clarity and impact.

  • A modern campus with plenty of workshop space, individual study areas and collaborative zones that support every stage of the design process.

Progression & Future Opportunities

By the time you complete this RIBA Part 2 programme, you’ll be fully equipped to move into professional architectural practice with confidence. Many graduates step into roles such as architect in training, urban design consultant, conservation and heritage specialist, or design-researcher working on the future of buildings and cities. It’s the kind of qualification that opens doors to both creative and technical career pathways.

Here’s how the university supports your progression and long-term success:

  • The Careers and Employability Service offers tailored support for architecture students, including portfolio reviews, one-to-one career advice, interview preparation and networking opportunities focused on the built-environment sector.

  • Architecture and Built Environment graduates from Huddersfield progress into careers in architecture, urban planning, sustainability consultancy and design leadership — sectors that value both creativity and research-driven thinking.

  • This programme is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and grants exemption from the Architects Registration Board Part 2 exam — a milestone required on the pathway to becoming a fully registered architect in the UK.

  • The qualification has long-term value not just for practice but also for consultancy and research, giving graduates the flexibility to shape their careers over time.

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates who want to continue their academic journey are well prepared to enter a PhD or doctoral programme in architecture, urban design or the built environment, paving the way for roles in academia, high-level research, or specialist consultancy.
