Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at the University of Kent is a two-year master’s designed for students who already have an architecture background and want to take their design ability, technical knowledge, and professional readiness to the next level. It’s ideal if you want to become a fully qualified architect and work confidently across both building and urban-scale projects.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
You’ll start by sharpening your urban and architectural design thinking. Studio projects focus on how buildings respond to their wider context, followed by design work that explores social engagement, site-specific interventions, and technical performance. Technology studies run alongside these modules to strengthen your understanding of materials, construction and environmental systems.

Year 2
You’ll take on more complex design briefs and learn to integrate building construction, sustainability, detail and user experience into your proposals. Modules in construction and professional practice prepare you for real-world project delivery and the responsibilities of becoming a registered architect.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Experiential learning is a huge part of the MArch Architecture at the University of Kent. You won’t just learn theory — you’ll be designing, testing, building and presenting your ideas using the same tools and processes that real architecture practices use. From your very first term, you’ll work in design studios, explore real sites in the region and develop projects that respond to authentic social, technical and environmental challenges. The School of Architecture & Planning provides advanced spaces for digital modelling, 3D fabrication and immersive design, so every project becomes an opportunity to gain professional-grade, hands-on experience.

And it’s not just about facilities — the way you learn mirrors professional practice. You’ll collaborate with peers, take part in design crits, develop proposals for live sites and communicate your work using interactive media, physical prototypes and digital platforms. Presenting and critiquing your design work in the Digital Crit Space, using high-definition interactive displays and built-in recording equipment — just like professional studio reviews.
Prototyping and experimenting with materials in the dedicated model-making workshops, equipped with laser cutters and 3D printers for detailed and exploratory model work.
Using VR-enabled computer labs and interactive digital modelling tools to test spatial ideas and simulate building experiences.
Designing for real sites across Kent — from urban areas to coastal communities — giving your studio projects genuine context rather than fictional briefs.
