Semester 2
The second semester centres on a major independent project or research-by-design thesis, allowing you to apply your skills to a personalised design or research challenge under expert guidance.

Focus Areas

Advanced design, computational design, sustainability, BIM, heritage, urban design

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will think critically about architecture, apply advanced design and technical strategies, conduct independent research, and deliver innovative, context-sensitive solutions.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This MA is not RIBA/ARB accredited, but it’s delivered by the Liverpool School of Architecture, a respected, professional architecture department.

Reputation & Employability

  • Liverpool is highly regarded for architecture, ranking in the top UK schools for design and research.

  • Graduates leave with skills valued in architecture, design, urban planning, sustainability, and digital technology.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the MA Advanced Architecture, learning goes far beyond lectures. You’ll work in a high-tech 24-hour studio alongside other Master’s students, using workshops, laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC routers, and computing labs, all supported by expert technicians. You’ll also gain real-world exposure through field trips, visits to architectural practices, and design reviews where industry professionals provide feedback on your work.

This hands-on approach includes:

  • Studio & Project Work: Small-group tutorials, collaborative design projects, and independent research or design work, culminating in a dissertation or research-by-design thesis.

  • Digital Tools & Labs: Access to dedicated labs with 3D printing, CNC routing, and advanced computing facilities for modelling, BIM, and parametric design.

  • Software & Methods: Training in industry-standard BIM, computational design, and digital modelling software.

  • Field Engagement: Site visits and design reviews to connect theory with real-world architecture.

  • Collaboration & Research: Opportunities to work on group projects, seminars, and personalised research under faculty guidance.

  • Career Support: Guidance for portfolio development, networking, and connecting with employers in architecture and related fields.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this MA are well-prepared for careers as architectural designers, BIM coordinators, design researchers, or conservation specialists, ready to work in architecture firms, construction companies, or heritage organisations. The programme equips you with advanced design, technical, and research skills that support long-term growth and leadership in the built environment.

This is supported by:

  • Career Studio Services: Dedicated career coaches help you plan your career, build your portfolio, prepare for interviews, and connect with internships or graduate opportunities.
