MA Architecture and Urbanism

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

The MA Architecture & Urbanism is a one-year, on-campus master’s that explores how cities are shaped by cultural, economic, and environmental forces. It’s perfect for students who want to combine research, theory, and design to influence the future of urban spaces.

Curriculum Structure

Over the year, you’ll start with Urban Strategies and Cities and Urbanism, building a strong understanding of how cities function and evolve. Mid-year, you’ll tackle a Research Project and Architectural Tactics, applying your insights to real-world and speculative design challenges. In the final phase, the Design Synthesis module brings everything together, letting you produce an original, research-informed urban proposal.

Focus Areas

Global urbanism, sustainable city design, speculative architecture, research-led design.

Learning Outcomes

Critically analyse urban contexts, design across scales, conduct independent research, and synthesize theory and practice into innovative urban proposals.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Joint degree from Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester; not professionally accredited (RIBA Part II / ARB).

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

The Manchester School of Architecture is internationally recognised, ranked among the top architecture schools worldwide, with strong industry connections for practice-based learning and career opportunities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At MSA, you’ll develop practical skills by working in purpose-built design studios, advanced workshops, and urban labs — with the city of Manchester itself serving as your extended classroom. The program balances conceptual research with hands-on making, using both digital and traditional tools, and is guided by experienced academic and technical staff.

Here’s how you’ll experience it in practice:

  • Work in model-making and fabrication workshops with CNC routers, laser cutters, and traditional hand tools.

  • Use IT and computer suites equipped with industry-standard CAD, visualisation, and design software, plus large-format and standard printers.

  • Access digital fabrication technology for large-scale models and advanced prototypes.

  • Benefit from photography and media studios for film, video editing, and AV projects.

  • Tap into material stores for supplies and AV equipment.

  • Utilize specialist libraries at both the University of Manchester and Manchester Met for architecture and design resources.

  • Participate in site visits, live projects, and urban labs, investigating real urban contexts collaboratively.

  • Use the Manchester Urban Design Lab, featuring 3D printers, laser cutters, computer clusters with design software, and dedicated studio space for research and experimentation.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this MA go on to shape the built environment in roles such as urban designer, architectural consultant, policy advisor, or researcher. With its mix of design, theory, and real-world analysis, the program is ideal for creative thinkers aiming to work in architecture practices, urban planning firms, research institutes, or sustainable development consultancies.

With that in mind:

  • The University of Manchester Careers Service supports you during your studies and for two years after graduation, helping with applications, CVs, interviews, and networking.

  • Alumni often take on roles in architecture, urban design, project management, and real estate.

  • Graduates have been employed by top firms like Foster + Partners, BDP, HawkinsBrown, and Sheppard Robson.

  • While this MA is not professionally accredited (it does not count as RIBA Part II), it offers strong long-term value by preparing you for research or design-led roles.

  • Many alumni also choose to continue into further academic study, including PhDs in architecture, urban studies, or planning, using the program’s research foundation to pursue funded doctoral opportunities.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing this MA, you could continue your studies with a PhD in Architecture, Urban Studies, or Planning at Manchester or other leading universities. The program provides a solid research base, equipping you to explore advanced topics in urbanism, policy, or design.
