MArch Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Salford

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at the University of Salford is designed to push your creativity and professional ability as an architect. It’s ideal if you want to develop a strong design identity, deepen your technical understanding, and prepare for full professional qualification in the UK.

Curriculum Structure

  • Year One — You begin by strengthening your design thinking and technical literacy. Through modules such as Design Studio 1 and Design Studio 2, along with Histories, Theories and Methodologies and Construction Science, Technologies and Law, you learn how ideas, context and building science come together to inform responsible architectural design.

  • Year Two — Your learning becomes more independent and ambitious as you tackle complex briefs in Design Studio 3 and Design Studio 4, where you respond to real social, environmental or urban challenges. You finish with a dissertation that allows you to explore a theme you care about — whether that’s sustainability, urban regeneration, housing, technology or community-focused design.

Focus Areas

Architectural design, sustainability, urban context, construction technology, research-led design, social and cultural engagement.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates emerge able to design buildings and spaces that respond to human, environmental and structural needs; connect theory and research to design; and meet the expectations of professional architectural practice at Part 2 level.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme is accredited at the ARB/RIBA Part 2 level — a key step toward full architect registration in the UK.

Reputation & Employability

Salford’s MArch is known for combining design ambition with practical, industry-focused architectural training, supported by dedicated studios and specialist facilities. Graduates progress into architectural practice, urban design, regeneration, housing and consultancy roles — and the course also provides a strong foundation for PhD or research-driven career paths.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the best things about studying MArch Architecture at Salford is how practical and immersive the learning is. You’ll spend most of your time working in studio environments, developing real projects, using professional digital tools and making physical models — just like you would in an architectural practice. This hands-on approach builds confidence as a designer and helps you graduate feeling ready for the real world.

Here’s what that experience looks like day-to-day:

  • Open-plan architecture studio in the SEE building — your main creative home on campus, where you’ll work on live briefs, participate in design reviews and collaborate with classmates in a professional studio setting.

  • Morson Maker Space and digital-fabrication workshops — specialist workshops with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC equipment that allow you to make physical models and prototypes to test ideas in materials and form.

  • Computer and digital design suites — dedicated labs where you’ll work with industry-standard architectural software for modelling, visualisation and design development.

  • Collaborative studio projects with real-world design briefs — most of your learning is project-based and teamwork-driven, mirroring how architects work in practice.

  • Connection to S-LAB (Salford Laboratory of Architecture) — exposure to a research culture that explores experimental and socially engaged design, encouraging you to think critically beyond the traditional studio.

  • Fieldwork and site visits — with Manchester on your doorstep, you’ll be studying architecture and urban conditions directly in the city, not only from behind a desk.

These elements make the programme feel professional, fast-moving and genuinely exciting — you’re constantly learning by making, testing and collaborating, not just listening.
