This two-year master’s is designed for students who want to push their architectural thinking further — creatively, critically, and technically. It’s ideal if you’re looking to develop a strong personal design identity while gaining the advanced professional skills the industry expects.
Curriculum structure
Year 1 — building your design voice
You’ll work in studio on design projects that challenge the social and urban responsibilities of architecture. Core modules such as Design Studies 4A & 4B and Architecture & the City help you strengthen your conceptual thinking and translate it into rigorous design work.
Year 2 — specialising and showcasing your direction
You’ll focus on your final major design project and dissertation, supported by Professional Studies and optional classes that align with your interests (for example urban theory or digital/BIM-based design). By the end of the year, you’ll produce a polished professional portfolio ready for architectural practice.
Focus areas
Responsive architectural design, urban design and theory, technical and formal design development
Learning outcomes
Graduates demonstrate strong architectural and urban design ability, critical thinking, independent research skills, and a professional-level portfolio.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
Fully accredited for RIBA/ARB Part 2, supporting graduates on the pathway to becoming a registered architect in the UK.
Reputation
The University of Strathclyde is highly regarded for its career-focused “useful learning” ethos and has been recognised nationally for its strong graduate outcomes and innovative teaching.
From day one, you won’t just study architecture — you’ll practise it. The MArch in Advanced Architectural Design at Strathclyde places you in an environment that mirrors real studio culture, where you develop ideas, build models, explore digital tools and test your designs through feedback from academics and industry professionals. As you progress, you’ll take on increasingly ambitious projects that challenge your creativity, your technical ability and your understanding of how architecture shapes society.
And because the learning is built around doing, you’ll gain hands-on experience through access to purpose-designed spaces and specialist resources, including:
Two dedicated architecture studios — one for collaborative and drop-in project work, and another used for structured design teaching and critiques.
A fully equipped architecture workshop with traditional model-making tools and portable power tools for building physical prototypes.
Access to computer labs across campus with digital modelling, visualisation and image-editing software, plus large-format plotters for A0 printing and laser-cutting services.
An architecture-specific reference library with thousands of books on architectural theory, urban design, technology and the built environment.
Study-trip opportunities that have previously taken students to major design capitals such as Barcelona, Rome and Venice.
A highly collaborative studio culture, with regular feedback from practising architects and guest speakers to keep learning connected to the industry.
Graduates from the MArch in Advanced Architectural Design at Strathclyde leave with a genuine professional edge. The programme is built to prepare you for architectural practice, giving you the design confidence, technical fluency and critical thinking needed in today’s industry. Many graduates step directly into roles such as Architect, Urban Designer, BIM Specialist, or Sustainable Design Consultant.
And because Strathclyde focuses strongly on employability and industry connection, you’ll be supported at every stage of your career journey through:
The university’s dedicated Careers & Employability Service, offering one-to-one guidance, employer networking opportunities, portfolio and CV support, and access to a jobs portal exclusively for Strathclyde students.
Strong partnerships between the Department of Architecture and the design, construction and engineering sectors, helping students build real professional contacts before graduation.
The long-term value of RIBA/ARB Part 2 accreditation, placing you firmly on the recognised pathway toward becoming a registered architect in the UK.
Strong graduate outcomes — around 92% of University of Strathclyde graduates secure work or further study within six months, with entry-level architectural salaries typically around £27,000–£30,000.
Further Academic Progression:
If you choose to continue your studies after the MArch, you’ll have a clear route into doctoral research through a PhD in Architecture at Strathclyde. You can also go on to specialise further in areas such as urban design, heritage and conservation, architectural theory or digital fabrication — giving you both professional and academic pathways depending on where you want your future to go.
