MArch Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at UWE Bristol is a two-year master’s designed to take you from a Part I graduate to a confident, industry-ready architectural professional. It blends creative studio work, ethical thinking, sustainability, and real-world practice so you can shape buildings and places that genuinely impact society.

Curriculum Structure

Year One

You’ll build your design identity through studio modules that encourage experimentation and collaboration. Alongside this, you explore sustainability, zero-carbon design, and the social roles of architecture — grounding your creativity in ethics, environmental responsibility, and critical practice.

Year Two

The second year becomes more specialised and professionally focused. You undertake a major Design Thesis that showcases your architectural voice, while modules on future practice, regenerative design, and manifesto development help you sharpen your philosophy and prepare for the realities of architectural work.

Focus Areas

Design-led practice, sustainability and regenerative architecture, live project work, research-driven design, architectural theory and ethics, professional readiness.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates learn to produce complex architectural designs, apply sustainable and ethical approaches, manage architectural projects, and confidently position themselves within the global profession.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The MArch is professionally recognised — it is prescribed by ARB and validated by RIBA as a Part 2 qualification, meaning it directly supports the path toward becoming a registered architect in the UK.

Reputation & Employability

UWE Bristol’s School of Architecture is known for producing creative, socially conscious, and industry-ready graduates. Students work closely with practicing architects and real clients, helping them progress smoothly into architectural roles after graduation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UWE Bristol, the MArch Architecture is designed to feel like professional practice from the moment you start. Instead of only learning through theory, you’ll spend most of your time in design studios, workshops and digital labs — developing ideas, testing materials, and learning how buildings take shape in the real world. You’ll collaborate with architects, engineers and clients on authentic design challenges, so by the time you graduate, you’ll already be operating with the confidence and mindset of a practicing architect.

You’ll experience all of this firsthand through the programme’s specialist learning facilities, tools and opportunities, such as:

  • Fully equipped architecture studios, including dedicated spaces for model-making, laser cutting, woodworking, metalwork and concrete modelling for full-scale prototyping.

  • Digital labs with CAD and BIM software, plus tools like Rhino/Grasshopper and rendering suites for parametric design, visualization and animation.

  • Live design briefs and project commissions with real clients and community organisations — helping you build practical experience and a professional portfolio.

  • Opportunities for internships and funded placements with design- and built-environment partners to gain on-site and industry exposure.

  • Project rooms and digital-imaging facilities for photography, audio-visual work and high-quality presentation production.

  • A 24/7 architecture-focused library space and online databases to support advanced research and technical development.

These facilities and opportunities are all located directly within UWE Bristol’s School of Architecture, dedicated to supporting hands-on learning and real-industry readiness.
