MA Editing and Post Production EPP

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

London South Bank University

Program Overview

The MA Editing and Post Production at LSBU is a postgraduate master’s designed to train you in the creative and technical craft of editing, colour grading, visual effects and post‑production — giving you the skills and experience to launch a career in film, television or digital media editing. It’s ideal if you want to specialise behind the camera (in the cutting room) rather than in directing or cinematography — building a strong technical foundation and a professional editing showreel.

Curriculum structure:

  • Full‑time (1 year) / Part‑time (2 years)
Whether you study full‑ or part‑time, you’ll engage in the core modules that make up the programme. In the first phase you take “Editing and Industry Workflows”, where you learn editing workflows used in professional film/TV post‑production using industry‑standard software like Avid Media Composer — understanding how the editing department operates within the wider production pipeline.
Alongside that, there is a module on “Colour Grading & Finishing”, where you learn colour grading and finishing techniques using professional suites (e.g. via DaVinci Resolve / Fusion) to master visual look, grading and finishing for film and TV outputs.
Next you study “The Art of Editing”, which covers editing not only as a technical task but as a creative, aesthetic and narrative craft: exploring editing theory, montage, continuity and editing styles — combining practical work and conceptual understanding.
There is also “Visual Effects and Compositing”, where you learn basic VFX and compositing (e.g. keying, masking, tracking) — a growing skill set in post-production especially for post‑production houses dealing with film, TV or digital content.
Finally, you complete a Major Project — a practical, portfolio‑level project where you apply your editing, grading, VFX and finishing skills to a film/TV or media production, producing work that demonstrates your readiness for professional editing work. Focus areas: editing workflows, colour grading and finishing, visual effects/compositing, post‑production technical skills, film & TV post‑production pipeline, creative editing theory & practice, and portfolio (showreel) development.

Learning outcomes: On graduation you will be able to handle professional editing workflows, produce high-quality graded and finished video content, apply VFX/compositing, understand the aesthetic and narrative role of editing, and build a showreel/portfolio demonstrating competence — preparing you for roles as editor, colourist, post‑production artist or related roles in film, TV and digital media.

Professional alignment (industry relevance): The course uses industry‑standard software (Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve/Fusion) and is taught by professionals working in post-production. Students can obtain accredited certification for these platforms, which is recognised in film/TV industries.  The course is housed in LSBU’s dedicated media facilities (Elephant Studios), offering realistic working conditions and networking opportunities with post‑production houses in London.

Reputation (employability & outcomes): Graduates from this MA have moved into professional editing and post‑production jobs — some working for major post‑production houses, freelance editing roles for TV series and documentaries, or continuing in creative‑media careers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you join LSBU’s MA Editing and Post Production, you're not just doing theory or short exercises — the training is deeply practical, built around industry‑standard workflows, real editing and post‑production suites, and projects that simulate professional film/TV post environments. You’ll learn both the creative side (storytelling, pacing, editing style) and the technical craft (colour grading, VFX, finishing, delivery) with tools and software widely used in the industry.

Here’s what your experiential learning will involve at LSBU:

  • Training on industry‑standard editing & post‑production software: You’ll learn and work on major platforms like Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve/Fusion — core tools used by professionals in film and television. This gives you practical, directly transferable skills for editing, colour grading, visual effects and finishing. Access to professional-grade studios and suites in “Elephant Studios”: The programme is housed in LSBU’s multimillion‑pound media facility — you get to use film studios, editing suites, grading suites, sound studios, Mac labs, and workstations configured for real post‑production workflows.

  • Hands‑on modules covering full post‑production workflow: Through modules such as “The Art of Editing,” “Visual Effects and Compositing,” “Colour Grading and Finishing,” and a “Major Project,” you’ll practise editing, VFX compositing, colour correction and finishing work — culminating in a substantial project that demonstrates your readiness for industry roles.

  • Collaborative and professional‑style working environment: The course emphasizes collaborative workflows (as in real post houses), and teaching is delivered by professionals currently working in the editing/post sector — which helps you learn not just technique, but workflows, communication, deadlines, and team coordination as in real jobs.

  • Industry links, masterclasses & networking opportunities: LSBU leverages strong connections with the film/post‑production industry. Students are invited to masterclasses and guest lectures by working editors, colourists, VFX professionals — providing insight into current industry standards and the chance to start networking early.

  • Flexibility — full‑time or part‑time delivery: The programme is offered full‑time (1 year) or part‑time (2 years), which gives flexibility if you want to work while studying or need a lighter schedule.

  • Preparation for real industry roles & freelance work: LSBU explicitly states the goal to produce “job‑ready postgraduates,” ready for roles in editing, post‑production houses, freelance post‑production, or even further research. Graduates are reportedly working at major post‑production houses and on high‑end TV productions for networks like Sky, BBC, Netflix.

  • Support for independent project and portfolio building: Through the major project and coursework, you get to build a professional‑level portfolio — editing, colour grading, finishing — which is essential when applying for jobs or freelance work in post‑production.

Progression & Future Opportunities

With the MA Editing & Post Production from LSBU, you build professional‑level editing, colour‑grading and VFX skills, and become “job‑ready” for post‑production work across film, television, streaming, and media content. Graduates often begin working as assistant editors, post‑production editors, colourists or visual‑effects/finishing artists — and some move fast into freelance editing or stable film/TV studio/editorial-house jobs.

Typical roles soon after graduation include:

  • Film/TV editor or assistant editor

  • Colourist / colour‑grading specialist

  • Visual‑effects or compositing artist / finishing editor

  • Post‑production technician in broadcast / online content houses

  • Freelance editor / post‑production contractor (films, documentaries, commercials, web content)

What LSBU gives you — and why that matters

  • Industry‑standard technical training: You’ll learn editing on tools widely used in the industry (e.g. Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve/Fusion), plus colour grading and VFX/compositing workflows.

  • Professional‑level facilities & studios: Access to the university’s film/TV studios (Elephant Studios), editing suites and post‑production labs — where you can build a solid showreel and get used to the technical and collaborative demands of real productions.

  • Strong industry links and graduate placement record: Alumni from this MA work at notable post‑production houses (e.g. ENVY, Clear Cut Pictures, Halo, Molinare, Evolutions) or in freelance roles for major broadcasters/clients, including high‑end television for networks like Sky, the BBC, or streaming services.

  • Accreditation and professional recognition: The programme is part of a school that is a full member of CILECT (the International Association of Film and Television Schools), which aligns the course with global standards for film/TV education and industry practice.

  • Career support and transition help: While studying — and for two years after graduating — you’ll have access to LSBU’s employability services: job/placement boards, career‑advice workshops, CV and interview support, and networking opportunities. This is designed to help you land your first post‑graduation role.

Realistic Career Paths & Long-Term Outlook

Because this MA gives you both technical skill and practical industry exposure, you’re not just set up for entry‑level roles — you can build a career that grows over time. Some possible trajectories:

  • Staff editor / assistant editor → full editor or colourist: Many begin by assisting on edits (feature films, TV series, documentaries), then over a few years advance to lead-editing, colour grading, VFX‑integrated editing, or finishing work.

  • Freelance post‑production professional: Use the showreel and skills to work on a variety of projects (independent films, commercials, online content, documentaries), giving you flexibility and creative variety.

  • Specialist roles in VFX, finishing, or digital content post‑production: With the VFX/compositing and colour‑grading training, you could target niche but high-demand roles in visual effects houses, digital studios, or streaming content post houses.

  • Creative / post‑production leadership or production roles: Over time, combining technical skill with industry experience, you might move into production management, post‑production supervision, or even content production/creation — especially if you network and build a good portfolio.

Because the course is accredited, has industry alignment, and offers relevant training, you’re positioned competitively whether you stay in the UK or aim for international opportunities.

Further Academic Progression:
If after this MA you want to deepen your expertise, you could:

  • Pursue further study or specialisation: e.g. advanced courses or short diplomas in VFX, colour science, digital post‑production, or film production.

  • Combine post‑production skills with creative/directorial ambitions — many editors eventually also direct or produce content, especially if they build a strong creative and technical portfolio.

  • Move into education/training roles — once you’ve built experience, you could transition to teaching editing/post‑production, mentoring, or training in film schools or media academies.
