Film Studies MA

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University College London

Program Overview

This interdisciplinary programme is taught by staff from a wide range of departments at UCL, all international experts in the fields of film and media studies. Linguistic and cultural expertise informs their teaching on the film-making traditions of Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and South-East Asia.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On UCL’s MA in Film Studies, you don’t just read about cinema — you live it through dynamic seminars, screenings, and guidance from leading researchers. You’ll collaborate closely with faculty to shape your own research, and you’ll get to deepen your understanding of film through London’s rich cultural and archival landscape. UCL’s central Bloomsbury location gives you unparalleled access to top-tier libraries, cinemas, and research hubs, meaning your study is deeply rooted in a real-world film culture.

Here’s how experiential learning works in practice on this MA:

  • Lectures, Seminars & Tutorials: You’ll learn through a blend of lectures and small-group seminars, where discussion is encouraged, not just passive listening.

  • Film & Video Screenings: Regular screenings allow you to engage directly with films — not just as texts, but as objects of critical study.

  • Supervised Dissertation: You work one-on-one with a supervisor to develop, write, and refine your 12,000-word dissertation.

  • Peer Presentation: You give a non-assessed presentation of your dissertation proposal to peers and tutors — helping you clarify your ideas and build confidence.

  • Optional Modules to Tailor Your Focus: You can choose from a wide range of modules like Global Cinemas, Film and/as Philosophy, Digital Media, Women Filmmakers, and many more.

  • Research Cost & Tools: UCL provides multimedia infrastructure — you’ll have access to print and visual materials, film-screening facilities, and UCL’s central London resources.

  • Archive, Library & Institutional Access: You’re in London — so you can easily tap into UCL’s libraries, the British Library, Senate House, the British Film Institute, and other nearby research centres.

  • Interdisciplinary & Research Community: You’re part of UCL’s Centre for Multidisciplinary & Intercultural Inquiry (CMII), surrounded by scholars working across film theory, history, and culture.

  • Employability & Career Skills: Through your coursework, research, and dissertation, you build strong analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills that are valuable in academia, media, and beyond.

  • University–Industry & Cultural Connections:

    • UCL’s central London location gives you a huge advantage: proximity to the British Library, British Film Institute, major cinemas, galleries, and arts organisations.

    • Through the CMII, you’ll engage with a truly cross-disciplinary research community, tapping into global cinema scholarship and cultural debates.

  • Long-Term Value & Accreditation:

    • This MA is awarded by UCL’s School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS) — one of the top research institutions in the UK.

    • The degree isn’t just theoretical: you’ll build real research experience, writing a 12,000-word dissertation, which strengthens your profile for academic or cultural careers.

  • Graduation Outcomes:

    • Graduates move into a diverse range of sectors: media, education, policy, arts administration, and beyond.

    • The MA gives you credibility for high-level roles, and your UCL network (faculty + peers) stays with you after graduation.
