Masters in Landscape Architecture MLA

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Greenwich

Program Overview

The Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Greenwich trains you to design outdoor spaces that are functional, sustainable and emotionally engaging. It’s a great fit if you care about ecology, cities, public spaces or environmental design and want to become a professional landscape architect.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build your foundations as a designer through modules such as Landscape Design 1 & 2, Contemporary Theories of Landscape, and Landscape Design Technology. This first year helps you gain confidence in creative landscape design, understand how plants and ecology shape space, and learn the technical requirements of materials and construction.

Year 2
You’ll move into advanced studio work with modules including Advanced Landscape Design, Landscape Representation, and Professional and Technical Practice, finishing with your Master’s Project. This is the year where your own design identity solidifies as you apply research, creativity and technical detail to produce a major portfolio-ready landscape project.

Focus areas

Landscape design, ecology and planting design, sustainable and contemporary landscape architecture, urban landscape and urbanism theory, design technology and representation

Reputation (employability rankings)

The University of Greenwich has a Gold rating in the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023), reflecting strong teaching, learning experience and student success. Students benefit from specialist studio spaces and industry-relevant facilities that support professional-level landscape design work.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What students love most about the MLA at the University of Greenwich is how much learning happens through real practice, not just theory. You’ll spend your time working in dedicated landscape-architecture studios and digital workshops inside a purpose-designed building, where ideas move quickly from sketch, to model, to technical drawings. The facilities are set up to mirror what landscape architects do in industry, so by the time you graduate you’ll already be familiar with professional tools, workflows and ways of thinking.

To show how hands-on the programme really is, here’s what you’ll have access to during your studies:

  • Design-studio workspace where you learn side by side with other landscape-architecture students, develop projects through tutorials and critiques, and take inspiration from the work around you.

  • Digital workshops and representation facilities for mapping, 3D visualisation and drawing — ideal for refining planting schemes, urban layouts and conceptual design ideas.

  • Green-roof and ecologically focused landscape spaces built into the campus, allowing you to explore planting, ecology and environmental design directly in a real setting.

  • Regular site and context visits to parks, public spaces and urban landscapes across London, helping you understand history, culture, ecology and human use through real examples rather than just textbooks.

  • A major independent Master’s Project that brings together research, creative design and technical detail — resulting in a portfolio-quality project that reflects your personal design identity.

  • Opportunities to engage with practitioners and researchers across the university’s wider design community, opening doors to collaborations across architecture, ecology, urbanism and environmental design.

This practical, immersive approach means you leave the MLA with the confidence and working habits of a professional landscape architect — not just a graduate with theoretical knowledge.
