MLA Master of Landscape Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

The MLA is a two-year, professionally accredited master’s that prepares you to design sustainable, inclusive landscapes where ecology, society, and creativity intersect. It’s ideal for students with a background in landscape architecture or closely related fields who want to combine theory, practice, and research to tackle real-world environmental and urban challenges.

Curriculum Structure

In the first year, you focus on building core skills through design studios and modules like Planting Design & Technologies, Biodiversity & Climate-Adaptive Design, and Landscape Theory & Context, working on projects that integrate ecological and social considerations.
The second year allows you to develop your own research-led design projects in the Landscape Atelier and complete a dissertation, alongside professional practice modules that prepare you for a career in landscape architecture.

Focus Areas

Sustainable design, ecological resilience, community engagement, climate adaptation, digital and material innovation

Learning Outcomes

Design socially and ecologically responsive landscapes, conduct independent research, integrate theory and professional practice, and communicate complex proposals through design and written work

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Accredited by the UK Landscape Institute (LI) and recognised by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), ensuring global professional recognition

Reputation & Employability

MSA (Manchester School of Architecture) is highly regarded globally, and graduates go on to work in urban design firms, environmental consultancies, planning authorities, and international organisations, equipped to make an immediate impact in the profession

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the MLA programme, you learn by doing. You’ll spend most of your time in purpose-built design studios, supported by workshops, digital design facilities, and collaborative project spaces. Field visits, live projects, and client-based briefs help you connect your design ideas with real-world landscapes, while working in interdisciplinary teams encourages innovative thinking about ecological, social, and technical challenges.

Key hands-on learning experiences include:

  • Working in the Model Making Workshop, using both traditional tools and digital fabrication techniques.

  • Learning essential design software and digital workflows with support from the Advanced Digital Design team.

  • Participating in MSA Live, a programme where students work on real-world design briefs for live sites.

  • Joining research-led ateliers in Part 2, collaborating with architecture and design students on innovative projects.

  • Engaging with real clients and live sites through the Landscape Profession & Practice module.

  • Accessing specialist libraries and computer suites at both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.

  • Going on field trips and study tours to local parks, public spaces, and landscape projects to understand planting, materials, and ecological design in context.

This combination of studio work, workshops, and hands-on field experience ensures you graduate with practical skills, research insight, and professional confidence.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MLA are well-prepared to step into professional roles in landscape architecture and related fields, such as landscape architect, urban designer, environmental consultant, or heritage and conservation officer. The programme combines practical design skills, research experience, and professional practice knowledge, giving you the confidence to work on complex ecological and urban projects.
