Financial Technology MSc

12 Months On Campus Masters Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

The MSc Financial Technology at the University of Nottingham is designed for students who want to sit at the intersection of finance, data, and technology. It’s ideal if you’re curious about how tools like Python, machine learning, and blockchain are transforming financial services, and you want practical skills that employers value.

Curriculum Structure

Autumn Semester – Building strong foundations
You begin by understanding how financial markets operate through Financial Markets and Instruments, covering assets such as equities, bonds, and derivatives. At the same time, Programming for FinTech develops hands-on Python skills, enabling you to analyse financial data and build simple financial applications, while Quantitative Research Methods strengthens your statistical and analytical thinking for real financial problems.

Spring Semester – Applying technology to finance
In the second semester, learning becomes more applied and forward-looking. Data Analytics and Machine Learning for FinTech introduces techniques such as regression, clustering, and neural networks using Python, while Blockchain and Cryptocurrency explores distributed ledger technology and its use in modern finance. You’ll also study FinTech Regulation and Data Protection, gaining a clear understanding of compliance, GDPR, and regulatory technology in digital finance.

Summer – Independent research project
The programme concludes with a dissertation, where you research a FinTech topic of your choice under academic supervision. This project allows you to apply your technical, financial, and analytical skills to a real-world issue, helping you graduate with evidence of independent thinking and practical expertise.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the MSc Financial Technology at the University of Nottingham, learning goes well beyond theory. You’ll build real, usable skills by working with the same digital tools and technologies used in today’s financial and tech industries, while applying what you learn through programming tasks, group discussions, and an independent research project. The programme is designed so that by the time you graduate, you’ve already practiced how FinTech works in real-world settings, not just studied it.

This hands-on experience comes together through:

  • Practical programming and data work: In modules such as Programming for FinTech and Data Analytics and Machine Learning for FinTech, you work extensively with Python, databases, and data analysis techniques, helping you gain confidence in coding and handling real financial data.

  • Industry-recognised digital certifications: Alongside your degree, you have the opportunity to complete professional digital certifications from Microsoft and SAP, allowing you to graduate with credentials that clearly demonstrate technical capability to employers.

  • Applied projects and independent research: The dissertation gives you the chance to explore a FinTech topic that genuinely interests you — whether that’s blockchain applications, data-driven finance, or regulatory technology — supported by one-to-one academic supervision.

  • Collaborative learning: Seminars and small-group teaching encourage discussion, teamwork, and problem-solving, helping you develop the communication skills needed in fast-moving fintech environments.

  • Strong learning facilities and resources: You’ll have access to Nottingham’s modern libraries, digital learning spaces, and Business School facilities, providing dedicated areas for research, group work, and independent study.

  • Careers and employability support: Through the University’s careers services and internship schemes, you can connect your academic learning with work experience opportunities in finance, technology, and related sectors.
