MSc Sustainable Business

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

The MSc Sustainable Business at The University of Manchester is designed for students who want to turn sustainability principles into real business impact. It’s perfect if you’re motivated by climate action, responsible leadership, and the idea of shaping how organisations transition toward a fairer, low-carbon future.

Curriculum Structure

Taught Year

Across your taught modules, you build a solid foundation in how sustainability actually works inside businesses. In Foundations and Cases in Sustainable Business, you’ll learn how major companies integrate sustainability into strategy, while Global Sustainability Challenges helps you understand the political and economic factors shaping global transitions. Modules like International Dimensions of Sustainable Development and Navigating System Transitions give you the frameworks to analyse real-world change, from energy transitions to global development issues. You’ll also gain practical skills through Accounting, Finance and the ESG Agenda, explore innovation in Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Business Model Innovation, and strengthen your leadership mindset in Responsible Management.

Research Project / Dissertation

Your final project is where everything comes together. Through the Sustainable Business Research Project, you’ll tackle a live sustainability challenge—either independently or as part of a team—supported by the research training you receive in The Research Process and Sustainable Business Projects. Many students choose issues connected to industry partners or Manchester’s own Living Lab, making the project feel real, relevant, and impactful.

Alliance Manchester Business School is well known for its strong links with industry and public sector organisations, helping graduates move into roles across corporate sustainability, consulting, NGOs, and policy.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On this programme, you don’t just sit through lectures — you’re thrown right into real sustainability challenges from day one. You’ll work on live projects through Manchester’s Living Lab, build meaningful solutions in cooperation with companies and NGOs, and take part in hands-on assignments that mirror real-world business work. The tools and support aren’t just academic — you get access to strong research networks, mentorship from faculty, and a structured research training process that helps you turn your ideas into actual impact.

Here’s a look at what that practically means:

  • University Living Lab Projects: You’ll team up with external organisations — like NGOs or companies — to tackle SDG-aligned sustainability challenges, turning your research into real-world action.

  • Group Research Project: In your final dissertation (the Sustainable Business Research Project), you’ll often work in teams to consult on a live business problem — giving you experience that’s very “real job, not just study.”

  • Structured Research Training: Through the Research Process & Sustainable Business Projects module, you’re taught how to design methods, collect data (qualitative & quantitative), and present your findings in credible, actionable ways.

  • Masters Consultancy Opportunities: You can work on consultancy-style assignments, helping real organisations while your work is supervised by Alliance MBS faculty — great for building your consulting or sustainability strategy experience.

  • Research Institute Access: You’ll be plugged into world-class research hubs like the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR) and the Sustainable Consumption Institute, so your work is informed and enriched by cutting-edge sustainability research.

  • Interactive Learning Activities: Classes aren’t just lectures — you’ll debate, role-play, and analyze real case studies to simulate business decision-making in a sustainability context.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the MSc Sustainable Business step into careers where they can make a real difference — whether that’s shaping ESG strategy, guiding companies through sustainability transitions, or leading purpose-driven projects. Most students find themselves moving into roles like Sustainability Consultant, ESG Manager, Sustainability Project Manager, or Product Sustainability Manager, all of which are in growing demand across business, government, and the non-profit sector.

To help you build that path, here’s what the University of Manchester puts behind you:

  • Dedicated Careers Support: Alliance MBS has a specialist Postgraduate Careers Service that works closely with sustainability and business students. You’ll get personal career coaching, CV and interview prep, employer events, skill-building workshops, and access to networking opportunities throughout the year.

  • Industry & Employer Connections: As part of Manchester’s strong industry partnerships, you’ll benefit from links with companies, consultancies, and NGOs that regularly collaborate with the Business School on projects, internships, and employer events.

  • Professional Accreditation Advantage: The course is accredited by ISEP, meaning you automatically become a student member — and you can fast-track to Practitioner Membership (PISEP) after graduation, which strengthens your professional credibility in the sustainability field.

  • Strong Graduate Reputation: The University of Manchester is consistently recognised by employers and is ranked 2nd in the UK for graduate employer interest — a strong signal of how well-regarded Manchester graduates are.

  • Clear Graduate Pathways: Alliance MBS’ official career profiles for this programme highlight real alumni moving into sustainability roles across corporates, consulting firms, and public-sector organisations.
