MSc International Business Management (Work Experience)

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Sheffield Hallam University

Program Overview

The MSc International Business Management (Work Experience) at Sheffield Hallam University isn’t just about textbooks and theory — it pairs global business know-how with real workplace exposure, giving you a chance to build practical skills before you graduate. If you see yourself working in international trade, global supply chains, consulting or business development — this course gives you a bridge from university into the real business world.

Curriculum structure
In the first year, you’ll dive into modules like International Strategy and Sustainability, Entrepreneurship in International Contexts, International Management Competencies, and Multinational Enterprises – Navigating Global Challenges. These help you understand how global companies operate, how to think strategically across markets, how to manage cross-cultural teams, and even how to launch business ideas in an international context.

In the second year you switch into applied-learning mode: you’ll do either a Work Experience Project, a Consultancy Project, or a Dissertation. That means you get to put theory into practice — whether by solving real business problems, working in a company, or researching something which matches your interest — refining skills in leadership, business analysis, project management and problem-solving.

Focus areas: global entrepreneurship; international strategy & sustainability; cross-cultural management; operations, supply-chain and global sourcing; consulting & real-world business operations.

Learning outcomes: by the end, you’ll be able to analyse international business environments, handle cross-border trade and investment issues, lead teams in multicultural settings, shape sustainable global strategies, and deliver real-world business solutions either through consultancy or during your placement.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The course is managed by Sheffield Business School — part of Sheffield Hallam — which is accredited by AACSB International, a globally recognised standard for business education.

Reputation (employability & rankings): Students graduate with a globally-relevant skill set — business analysis, leadership, cross-cultural competence, project management — that employers actively look for. The course emphasises practical readiness and “real-world” learning (via placements, consultancy projects, guest lectures) to help boost your employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What really sets this MSc apart is how much practical experience you get. Instead of only learning about global business in theory, you’ll constantly apply what you study — through real company projects, hands-on activities, and a dedicated work-experience opportunity. You’ll also work in modern, digitally-enabled spaces that support collaboration, creativity and problem-solving, so you’re building real business confidence even before stepping into your placement. And with Sheffield Hallam’s strong employer connections, you’ll feel supported every step of the way as you gain the kind of experience companies genuinely look for.

Here’s how your experiential learning actually happens on this course:

  • Up to 12 months of real work experience — you get the chance to secure a placement and work directly inside an organisation. This is where you test your skills, understand workplace culture, and build experience that strengthens your CV.

  • Live projects with real companies — throughout the course, you’ll work on actual business challenges, not hypothetical ones. It’s a chance to collaborate with organisations, explore solutions, and see how businesses operate from the inside.

  • Simulations and digital learning tools — when you’re not working with companies, you’ll practise strategic decision-making through business simulations and technology-enhanced sessions that help you build confidence in handling managerial situations.

  • Access to modern business facilities — including the university’s specialist learning environments, practice and simulation spaces, and the 24/7 library — giving you areas to research, collaborate, plan projects, and prepare for professional tasks.

  • Guest speakers and networking opportunities — industry professionals regularly come in to share what’s happening in their fields, helping you connect classroom learning with the real world and expand your professional network.

  • Career-focused support — from CV and placement workshops to interview prep, the careers team helps you feel fully prepared to secure meaningful work experience and future employment.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Once you finish the MSc International Business Management (Work Experience), many graduates step confidently into roles such as business or market developer, business analyst, supply-chain/logistics manager, consultant, brand or project manager — giving you real flexibility depending on what you enjoy and where you want your career to go. Because the course is designed with real business environments in mind, it's common for students to begin working almost right after graduation. What’s more, the skills and experience you gain at SHU give you a solid foundation for long-term success in international business or global trade.

Here’s how SHU supports your career progression — and what you might expect:

  • Strong employability support from day one — SHU offers dedicated career-services support to help you prepare CVs, apply for placements, and connect with employers through work placements.

  • Proven graduate success rates — According to its own data, many SHU graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating.

  • Valuable global-ready skills that employers look for — Because the programme mixes academic knowledge with real-world work experience, you’ll graduate skilled not only in business theory but also in analysis, teamwork, international management and cross-cultural collaboration — all highly relevant for firms operating globally.

  • Flexibility to work internationally or back home — The international-business orientation means your degree is relevant worldwide — useful if you decide to work abroad, return to your home country (for example India), or join a multinational firm.

  • Long-term degree value — Earning your master’s from SHU’s business school (which emphasises practical work-experience) adds weight to your CV, especially when employers value work-readiness and global business competence.

Further Academic Progression:
If after this MSc you feel like digging deeper — you could consider doing a research-based master’s or even a PhD in international business or global trade/strategy. Alternatively, if you want to shift toward senior management or leadership roles, you might go for an MBA or a specialized master’s in supply-chain management, global trade, or international consultancy — building on the solid fundamentals you’ll have gained at SHU.
