MSc International Business

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Salford

Program Overview

The MSc International Business at the University of Salford is designed for students who want to build a global career and understand how organisations operate across borders in today’s fast-moving, digital world. It’s a practical, future-focused degree that blends international business knowledge with real experience so you can confidently step into global roles.

Curriculum Structure

Your learning journey

Throughout the course, you’ll study core themes that shape the world of international business — global markets, cross-cultural leadership, digital transformation, finance, marketing, and responsible global management. Each module is designed to help you understand how companies grow beyond their home country and how professionals navigate cultural and economic differences.

Core modules (across the year)

You’ll start with International Business Foundations and Trends, which gives you a strong grounding in why companies expand globally and how different political and economic environments influence business decisions.
As you progress, Cross-Cultural Leadership Skills helps you build the cultural awareness and communication skills needed to lead international teams — one of the most valuable abilities in global careers.
You’ll also dive into modules like International Marketing, International Supply Chain Management, International Financial Management, International Business and the Digital Economy, and Globally Responsible Leadership and Citizenship. These give you a well-rounded understanding of how companies market their products worldwide, manage logistics and finances across countries, use digital tools for expansion, and lead responsibly in an interconnected world.

Final Trimester (Your Pathway Choice)

In the last part of the course, you get to choose how you want to apply your learning:

  • Industry placement: After completing Research Methods for Managers, you can take up a full-time placement where you experience international business in action.

  • Short internship: A shorter industry project if you want practical exposure without committing to a long placement.

  • International Consultancy Project: If you prefer a more strategic route, you’ll study Researching International Market Opportunities and International Entry Strategies and then work with a real organisation to help them expand into global markets.

This flexible ending helps you tailor the degree to your strengths — whether you want hands-on experience or a consultancy-style project.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the biggest strengths of the MSc International Business at Salford is how much real-world experience you gain throughout the course. From day one, the programme is designed to help you apply what you're learning to genuine business scenarios — whether that’s through internships, consultancy work, or industry-connected projects. You’ll also benefit from Salford Business School’s strong employer links and hands-on teaching style, which means you’re constantly building skills that translate directly into global career opportunities.

To show you exactly what this looks like in practice, here’s how the course helps you learn through real experience:

  • Long Work Placement (up to 12 months): After completing the Research Methods for Managers module, you can step into a full-time placement worth 45 credits. It’s a chance to get real experience inside an organisation, develop your professional confidence, and strengthen your CV while still earning academic credit.

  • Shorter Business Internship (3 months): If you prefer something more flexible, the shorter internship route still gives you solid exposure to an international business environment — perfect if you want practical experience but can’t commit to a full year.

  • International Consultancy Project: Instead of an internship, you can choose a consultancy-style route where you work directly with a real organisation. You’ll study Researching International Market Opportunities and International Entry Strategies, then produce a detailed consultancy report with strategic recommendations — just like a real consultant.

  • Live Industry Engagement: Salford Business School regularly brings employers into the classroom through live briefs, guest speakers, and industry-led projects. This gives you the chance to tackle real challenges that companies are facing today, with feedback from professionals who work in that field.

  • Career & Employability Support: Throughout your studies, the University’s specialist Employability team helps you prepare for placement roles — with CV checks, interview prep, networking support and direct links to employers looking for international business talent.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the MSc International Business at Salford step confidently into careers where global thinking, cross-cultural skills, and strategic decision-making matter. Many move straight into roles such as international business manager, business development manager, consultant or trade officer — roles where the combination of practical experience and global insight gained on this degree really shines. And because the course develops skills that employers value worldwide, it opens doors across multinational companies, government organisations and international markets:

  • Personalised employability support: Salford Business School’s Employability Hub works closely with postgraduate students — helping you prepare for placements, improve your CV, practise interviews and connect directly with employers looking for international business talent.

  • Real-world employment benefits: Students who choose the placement or internship route often experience stronger academic performance and enhanced career prospects, with many turning their placement into a full-time job offer.

  • Industry-connected learning: The Business School collaborates with organisations ranging from large global brands to innovative SMEs, giving you access to live briefs, real industry challenges and employer-led projects that build both confidence and experience.

  • Accreditation that travels with you: This degree is EFMD-accredited, which adds long-term credibility to your qualification and signals globally recognised quality to employers anywhere in the world.

  • Strong graduate outcomes: Alumni have progressed into impressive roles — from Marketing Director at Molson Coors to Business Development Manager at Shell, and strategic positions at companies like Siemens, along with roles in trade policy, embassies and government bodies.

Further Academic Progression:

If you ever choose to continue your studies, this MSc gives you an excellent foundation for a PhD in International Business, global trade, development studies, or other management research fields. The research skills you build — especially through the consultancy project or placement route — make postgraduate research a natural next step.
