Robotics and Artificial Intelligence - MSc/PgD/PgC

1 Years On Campus Masters Program

Cardiff Metropolitan University Llandaff Campus

Program Overview

The MSc Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at Cardiff Metropolitan University combines core robotics, AI and autonomous-systems training with real-world, hands-on design and development of intelligent machines. It suits students with engineering, computer-science or related backgrounds who want to build robotics, automation or AI-enabled systems — from autonomous robots to service/social robots or AI-driven applications.

Curriculum Structure:
Students study compulsory modules including Advanced AI in Robotics, 3D Bio-Inspired Robot Design, Mobile Robotics, Applications for Social and Service Robots, Vision with Deep Learning, and Research & Professional Practice. These teach them AI methods for robotics, bio-inspired design and rapid prototyping, robot motion/planning/navigation, social- and service-robot design, computer vision with deep learning, and research skills for engineering projects. In their final stage they complete a Technology Dissertation — a 40-credit project where they design and build a robotics or AI system, applying everything learned to an original, real-world problem.

Students may also choose optional modules such as Sensors and Actuators, Frontiers in Technology, Programming for Data Analysis, or Information Security, allowing specialisation in embedded systems, emerging tech, data-analysis or system security.

Focus areas: “Robotics & Autonomous Systems, Artificial Intelligence for Robots, Deep Learning Vision, Bio-Inspired Robot Design, AI Application Development, Service & Social Robots”

Learning outcomes: “Develop AI-driven robotics systems; design and build autonomous or service robots; apply deep learning to vision tasks; manage embedded and actuator systems; complete independent applied robotics/AI research or product design.”

Professional alignment (accreditation): The MSc is accredited by Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for Further Learning toward Chartered Engineer status and targets accreditation by The Chartered Institute for IT (BCS) for Chartered IT Professional recognition — aligning with industry standards for engineering and IT professionals.

Reputation (employability rankings): Cardiff Met’s programme benefits from its integration with the EUREKA Robotics Centre, a specialist UK robotics centre, and is recognised for producing graduates ready for industry or research careers in robotics, automation, social/service robots, AI engineering and intelligent systems.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students gain practical skills through hands-on projects in the University's robotics laboratories, using industrial-grade robotic platforms and AI software to design, build, and program intelligent autonomous systems. This applied learning is central to the curriculum:

  • Software & Tools: Training in Python, C++, and ROS (Robot Operating System) with key AI libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch).

  • Robotics Facilities: Access to industrial robotic arms (KUKA, ABB), mobile robots, and sensor systems.

  • AI Integration Projects: Hands-on work combining computer vision, machine learning, and robotic control.

  • Research Project: An individual dissertation focusing on an AI application in robotics.

  • Industry-Standard Platforms: Use of simulation environments and professional robotic programming tools.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Cardiff Metropolitan University's MSc Robotics and Artificial Intelligence master advanced AI, machine learning, robotics vision, 3D bio-inspired design, mobile robotics, deep learning, and swarm intelligence to develop autonomous systems addressing social, environmental, and industrial challenges. Hands-on prototyping, rapid 3D printing, and real-world projects cultivate ethical leadership and entrepreneurial skills for global robotics innovation. Typical job roles: robotics engineer, AI systems developer, automation specialist, machine learning researcher.

  • University services: Careers team provides portfolio development, internships, mobility trips, and industry networking for robotics/AI placements.
