Betty Campbell MBE was a Welsh community activist and the country's first black head teacher. She lived from 6 November 1934 until 13 October 2017. She received a scholarship to attend Cardiff's Lady Margaret High School for Girls despite coming from a low-income family in Butetown. After completing teacher training, Campbell rose to the position of head teacher at Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff. She actively participated in the community and implemented creative ideas for children's education.In the 1980s, she served on the board of BBC Wales and was appointed an honorary fellow of Cardiff Metropolitan University. She received an MBE in 2003 for her contributions to community life and education. The Black Members' group at Unison Cymru presented her with a lifetime achievement award in 2015 in recognition of her work in Welsh education and Black history. View Less
