MSc Artificial Intelligence

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Nottingham Trent University

Program Overview

The MSc Artificial Intelligence at NTU is a one-year full-time (with optional placement) programme designed for graduates with a quantitative, technical or computing background (no prior AI needed). Students study modules in both foundational and applied AI (machine learning, big data infrastructure, cognitive systems, etc.) and complete a major project. Nottingham Trent University

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1 (Taught Modules):
You’ll take core units like Foundations of AI, Introduction to Computer Programming, Artificial Cognitive Systems, Fundamentals of Big Data and Infrastructure, Applied AI and Data Mining, and Research Methods. These cover theory and hands-on practice: programming skills, handling big data systems, pattern discovery, reasoning and optimisation.
In the final part, you’ll undertake the Major Project (60 credits), selecting a topic applying your AI/data-science skills to a real problem.

Focus areas
“Foundations of AI; Big Data Infrastructure; Machine Learning & Data Mining; Programming; Cognitive Systems; Major Project”

Learning outcomes
“Build AI models; handle large datasets; apply programming and cognitive techniques; perform data mining; conduct independent project-level research”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
NTU is rated TEF “Gold” for teaching; the course is designed with employer feedback.

Reputation (employability rankings):
In REF 2021, ~ 80% of NTU’s Computer Science submission was rated world-leading or internationally excellent.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is designed to transform theoretical AI concepts into practical, deployable skills through hands-on work with real-world applications. You will develop these skills using NTU's advanced computing infrastructure and specialist AI laboratories, working with the same tools used by industry professionals. This applied approach is central to the programme's delivery:

  • Specialist AI and Robotics Facilities: You will have access to NTU's Intelligent Systems Laboratory and Robotics Laboratory, which are equipped with humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles, and sensor systems for developing and testing AI algorithms in physical environments.

  • Industry-Standard AI Software: The curriculum involves extensive practical work with core programming languages like Python, and major machine learning libraries and platforms including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV for computer vision applications.

  • Substantial Individual Project: A core component is a significant research project where you will develop and implement an AI system to address a substantial real-world challenge, often in collaboration with industry partners or research centres.

  • Practical, Project-Based Modules: Learning is reinforced through hands-on coursework that involves building and training neural networks, developing intelligent agents, and creating machine learning models using real datasets.

  • Research Centre Collaboration: The programme is supported by NTU's Computational Intelligence and Applications Research Group, providing opportunities to engage with cutting-
