MSc Data Science

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Greenwich

Program Overview

The MSc Data Science at University of Greenwich is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) programme designed for graduates with quantitative or technical backgrounds. It teaches you programming, machine learning, statistics, data visualisation, big data infrastructure, and includes a major project to build applied skills. University of Greenwich+1

Curriculum Structure:

You study compulsory modules like Programming Fundamentals for Data Science, Big Data, Machine Learning, Applied Machine Learning, Data Visualisation, and Statistical Methods for Time Series Analysis. These build both the technical foundations (coding, handling large datasets, algorithms) and statistical methods for analysing temporal data.  You also choose optional modules (15 credits each) such as Clouds, Grids and Virtualisation or Blockchain for FinTech Applications, and also from Technologies for Anti-Money Laundering and Financial Crime or Graph and Modern Databases. These let you specialise in infrastructure, finance-oriented data issues or advanced database systems.

Focus areas
“Programming; Machine Learning; Big Data Infrastructure; Data Visualisation; Time Series Statistics; Specialisations in Finance or Databases; Project Work”

Learning outcomes
“Gain ability to build ML models; process and analyse large datasets; visualise complex data; apply statistical and temporal methods; specialise in fields like FinTech or database systems; deliver a substantial independent data science project”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, partially meeting requirements for Chartered IT Professional status.

Reputation (employability rankings):
Greenwich holds a Gold rating in TEF 2023, recognising high quality in teaching and student outcomes. Graduates are prepared for roles in data science, AI, machine learning across sectors.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme focuses on applying advanced computing principles to solve real-world problems using the University's modern computing infrastructure. You will develop practical skills in specialised labs equipped with industry-standard software and development tools. This hands-on approach is delivered through:

  • Specialist Computing Laboratories: Access to the University's Networking Lab and Software Development Lab with high-specification workstations for programming and systems development.

  • Industry-Standard Software: Practical work with programming languages including Java, Python, and C#, plus database systems like Oracle and development environments such as Visual Studio.

  • Substantial Individual Project: A major final project where you apply your skills to a substantial computing challenge, developing a sophisticated software solution.

  • Project-Based Learning: Collaborative group work and practical assignments that simulate professional software development environments.
