MSc Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Hull

Program Overview

The MSc Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Hull is a one-year conversion master’s for students from STEM or non-STEM backgrounds. You’ll learn Python programming, statistics, machine learning, big data, data visualisation, computer vision, and the ethical/legal aspects of using data.

Curriculum Structure:

You start with Programming for AI and Data Science, Fundamentals of Data Science, and Understanding Artificial Intelligence. These modules build your coding ability, statistical thinking, and foundation in what AI is and how it can be applied.  Then you study Big Data and Data Mining and Applied Artificial Intelligence, exploring large datasets, mining patterns, and advanced AI techniques such as deep learning, preparing you for real-world applications. You complete the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Research Project (60 credits), where you design and carry out a research or industry-aligned project in an area of interest.

Focus areas (in a string):
“Python Programming; Statistics; Machine Learning; Big Data; Data Mining; Computer Vision; Ethics & Legal Data Use; Research Project”

Learning outcomes (in a string):
“Apply AI and data science techniques; analyse big datasets; design, implement and interpret visualisation; understand ethical, legal issues; carry out independent project work”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Not explicitly BCS-accredited in sources reviewed, but strongly linked with the Hull Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence & Modelling (DAIM), industry partners and research reputation.

Reputation (employability rankings):
Hull’s Computer Science research is ranked 5th in the UK for impact. Graduates are in demand by employers such as Amazon and Scottish Power.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is designed to give you hands-on experience in developing intelligent systems and extracting insights from complex datasets. You will build practical skills using the University's high-performance computing labs and industry-standard software for machine learning and data analysis. This applied approach is central to the curriculum and delivered through:

  • High-Performance Computing Facilities: You will have access to the University's High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster and dedicated data science labs for processing large datasets and training complex machine learning models.

  • Industry-Standard Software and Tools: The curriculum involves practical work with data science programming languages like Python and R, along with major machine learning libraries and platforms including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Apache Spark.

  • Substantial Individual Project: A core component is a significant research project where you will apply AI and data science techniques to a substantial real-world problem, developing a complete solution from data processing to model deployment.

  • Practical, Project-Based Modules: Many modules include hands-on coursework involving real datasets, where you'll develop and evaluate machine learning models and data analysis pipelines.
