Infrastructure Investment and Finance MSc

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University College London

Program Overview

The MSc Infrastructure Investment and Finance at University College London is a one‑year programme that combines finance, economics, policy, and project-level infrastructure planning. It is ideal for students who want to play a role in financing, advising, or managing major infrastructure projects — whether in transport, energy, water, urban development, or public-private partnerships — particularly if they have a quantitative or analytical background in engineering, economics, finance, or related fields.

This course is designed for those who want to understand the commercial, financial, and economic drivers behind infrastructure development and investment, combining theory with real-world insights to prepare for careers in advisory, financing, public-private partnerships, or infrastructure asset management.

Curriculum Structure

Term 1

Core modules cover infrastructure finance, economic principles and policy, infrastructure as an asset class, and research methods and financial modelling. These modules provide foundational understanding — from cost of capital and financing structures to economic and policy contexts for infrastructure projects.

Term 2

You take a core module on infrastructure asset management and choose three optional modules based on interest. Electives might include special-purpose vehicles in infrastructure finance, lifecycle management of built assets, green finance and carbon accounting for infrastructure, smart infrastructure technologies, or environmental/climate-policy aspects. This flexibility lets you focus on finance, sustainability, or technical-policy aspects according to your career goals.

Term 3 (Dissertation / Project Phase)

The final term is dedicated to a research dissertation, allowing you to explore a topic such as financing models for infrastructure, risk and return in large-scale projects, or sustainability and investment trade-offs. This provides strong analytical and research experience, preparing you for real-world infrastructure challenges.

The course is also offered in part-time (2 years) or flexible modular formats, providing flexibility if you want to study alongside work or other commitments.

Focus Areas

Infrastructure finance and investment; project financing and asset management; economic and policy aspects of infrastructure; risk and capital-cost analysis; green finance, sustainability, and climate-related finance; lifecycle asset management; infrastructure project lifecycle and financing structures; public-private partnerships and regulatory environments.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will:

  • Understand how large-scale infrastructure projects are financed, funded, and structured — including public-private partnerships, project finance, cost of capital, risk allocation, and investment planning.

  • Analyse infrastructure as an asset class, assess long-term investment returns, and evaluate regulatory and sustainability risks.

  • Apply multidisciplinary skills combining finance, economics, policy, and sustainability to infrastructure projects.

  • Gain research and practical project experience through the dissertation, preparing for advisory, financing, consulting, or asset-management roles.

Professional Alignment (Career Relevance / Accreditation)

This MSc prepares students for careers in infrastructure finance, advisory, investment, public-private partnerships, project management, asset management, and consulting. Employers include infrastructure developers, financiers, equity funds, banks, advisory firms, regulatory or government bodies, and large infrastructure operators.

The programme is delivered by UCL’s Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, with strong relevance for the infrastructure and built-environment sectors, and provides professional credibility through alignment with industry standards.

Reputation (Employability & Academic Standing)

The MSc is one of the few globally that directly combines finance, economics, policy, and infrastructure, giving it a unique niche. Graduates work across construction, property, finance, consulting, engineering, public sector, and sustainable infrastructure internationally.

UCL’s location in London — a global infrastructure and finance hub — provides excellent access to internships, networking, and career opportunities, enhancing employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you join the Infrastructure Investment and Finance MSc at University College London (UCL), you’ll gain more than theoretical knowledge. You’ll build real-world skills in financing, planning, and managing infrastructure projects — covering economics, capital markets, policy, sustainability, and project-level risk and financing. You’ll study in London, at the heart of global infrastructure finance, and have access to a strong network of industry and advisory firms.

Here’s how the experiential learning works — and where you’ll get hands-on or practical exposure:

  • Applied case-based & problem-based learning: The course emphasizes seminars, workshops, and tutorials centered around real infrastructure-finance case studies. You’ll examine real (or realistic) infrastructure investment projects: how they’re financed, who invests, how governments and private investors interact, risks involved, financing structures, lifecycle, and asset management.

  • Financial modelling & risk analysis tools: From early on, you’re trained in research methods and financial modelling tailored for infrastructure. This builds quantitative skills relevant for analysing investments, risk allocation, returns, and cost of capital.

  • Specialized modules covering real infrastructure sectors: In the second term, you pick optional modules focused on real-world infrastructure sectors — e.g., infrastructure lifecycle management, smart infrastructure technologies, green finance and climate-policy aspects, special-purpose-vehicle financing, carbon accounting, and more.

  • Independent research dissertation: In the final term (and summer), you’ll complete a dissertation, diving deeply into one infrastructure-finance challenge of your choice. You’ll practice research design, data or financial analysis, and critical thinking — almost like a mini-consulting or advisory project under supervision.

  • Field-level exposure and industry linkages: The programme has a history of organising field visits to professional environments, such as law firms and financing firms in London, giving first-hand exposure to real infrastructure finance decisions.

  • Networking & industry connection built-in: Being based in London at UCL’s built-environment and infrastructure hub means you’re close to investors, developers, and advisory firms — a major advantage if you want a career in infrastructure financing, consulting, or project development.

🎯 What this degree prepares you for

  • You’ll gain expert knowledge on infrastructure finance: economics of infrastructure development, financing models (public and private), risk management, project finance, asset management, lifecycle finance, green finance — everything required to understand and lead large-scale infrastructure investments.

  • You’ll be well-suited for roles like infrastructure investment analyst/advisor, project finance specialist, consultant for construction or infrastructure firms, infrastructure fund manager, public-sector/regulatory advisor, or roles in advisory firms dealing with large infrastructure projects.

  • Because the programme is multi-disciplinary (economics, finance, policy, technical infrastructure understanding), it’s ideal if you come from engineering, finance, economics, built-environment, or planning, giving you a pathway to pivot or expand your career background.

✅ Who this programme is ideal for

  • You have a background in engineering, finance, economics, built-environment, planning, or related fields and are interested in infrastructure projects — not just building them, but financing, managing, and investing in them.

  • You want a master’s that combines finance + policy + real infrastructure-sector understanding, not a generic finance degree.

  • You’d like to work in roles where you can influence which projects get built, how they are financed, who invests, and how risks and environmental/financial sustainability are balanced — essentially bridging technical infrastructure and financial markets/investment.

Progression & Future Opportunities

If you complete the MSc Infrastructure Investment and Finance at UCL, you’ll be well-prepared for roles such as Infrastructure Investment Analyst, Project Finance Specialist, Infrastructure Consultant, or Public‑Sector Infrastructure/Policy Advisor — a mix of finance, economics, and infrastructure/project-management skills that employers value deeply.

Progression & Future Opportunities:

  • University services that support employment: As a student, you’ll benefit from support by the UCL Careers team, events and employer engagement arranged by the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, and access to UCL’s extensive global alumni network — boosting your chances of internships and job placements in the infrastructure, finance, or consulting sectors.

  • Accreditation & long-term value: The degree is currently undergoing reaccreditation with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), which speaks to its professional credibility and long-term recognition in built environment, infrastructure, and finance industries.

  • Industry-ready, multi-disciplinary skills: The programme blends economic theory, infrastructure finance, risk modelling, policy analysis, and asset management — skills highly relevant for large-scale infrastructure planning, public-private partnerships (PPP), green finance, and sustainable development projects worldwide.

  • Strong employment outcomes: Graduates from the Bartlett School (which offers this programme) show good employability — many find positions in construction/built environment, finance, consultancy, government, or infrastructure-related firms.

  • Long-term impact and global relevance: Given the growing global demand for infrastructure — including transport, energy, water, telecom, and sustainable urban development — this degree positions you to contribute meaningfully to major projects worldwide, combining financial acumen and infrastructure-sector knowledge.

Further Academic Progression:
After finishing this MSc, you could deepen your specialization via a PhD or research-based master’s in infrastructure economics, sustainable infrastructure, or urban development. Alternatively, you could combine this with courses in public policy, environmental finance, or project management — making you competitive for senior roles in infrastructure investment, advisory, government planning, or even academia/research.
