Program Overview

The MSc Biomedical Engineering at Swansea University is a one-year full-time programme designed to equip students with engineering skills to understand and innovate biomedical systems and devices. The course covers multiple scales, from the whole human body to cellular and nanoparticle levels, making it suitable for both biomedical engineering graduates and those from other engineering or related disciplines seeking a conversion programme. 

Swansea University is well-regarded for its practical, research-led approach and access to cutting-edge facilities on its Bay Campus. The course combines analytical and experimental skills essential for tackling contemporary biomedical engineering challenges.

Teaching:

  • Practical skills sessions, seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and presentations. Also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching. 

Course overview:
Two specialist streams are offered:

  • Biomechanics: Focuses on biosolid mechanics, biofluid dynamics, and medical device design

  • Biomaterials: Emphasizes biomaterials development and interactions at micro and nanoscale

  • Core Modules: Image-based Biomaterial Fabrication & Biomechanical Testing , Bio-nanotechnology, Principles of Nanomedicine, Sustainability and Environmental Assessment, Advanced Microfluidics, Socio-Technical Engineering, Medical Imaging & Informatics, Simulation Based Product Design

  • Optional Modules: Biomedical Flows in Physiology and Medical Devices , Advanced Solid Mechanics, Tissue Engineering, Microstructure and Characterization, Implant and prosthetic Technology, Implant Engineering 2

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Practical laboratory which includes Biomedical Engineering Simulation & Testing (BEST) Lab and engineering workshops

  • Hands-on data acquisition and analysis training

  • Research project or dissertation focused on biomedical engineering

  • Access to advanced biomedical and engineering laboratories
