1 Year On Campus Masters Program
This one‑year master’s programme gives you the chance to really think and act like an international journalist — working across online, broadcast and multimedia platforms, in a global context. It’s ideal if you’re passionate about news, digital storytelling and journalism that reaches beyond borders and want to build real‑world skills and a strong portfolio in just 12 months.
Curriculum structure
Full‑time (1 year):
In the first trimester, you begin with Global Perspectives on Journalism (30 credits) — exploring how journalism works in the digital age, the challenges and opportunities of media convergence, and the evolving international newsroom.
In the second trimester, you’ll take News and Ethics (30 credits) to sharpen your professional standards, ethical judgement and news‑gathering and reporting skills across print, online and broadcast formats. Then you move into Journalism Practice in a Digital Newsroom or one of the optional modules (~30 credits) where you’ll work in simulated newsrooms, producing content for digital platforms, broadcast and online.
In the final trimester, you’ll complete your Major Project (60 credits) — choosing either a dissertation or practice‑as‑research project where you create a professional journalistic portfolio or undertake an in‑depth research topic, drawing together everything you’ve learned.

Professional alignment (accreditation)
While this specific programme does not carry the UK’s National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) accreditation, it’s delivered at the Salford MediaCity campus — right next door to organisations like the BBC and ITV — giving you genuine industry‑standard facilities and networking opportunities.
Reputation (employability rankings)
The course emphasises building a professional portfolio and preparing for careers in journalism, public relations, media analysis or online content creation — with graduates working worldwide, including roles such as TV anchor or founder of specialist news websites.
From the moment you join this programme, you’ll be immersed in real‑world journalism practice rather than just reading about it. At Salford’s MediaCity campus you’ll step into working newsrooms, high‑end TV and radio studios, and digital editing suites — all the tools professionals use today. You’ll be creating content for broadcast, online and mobile platforms, collaborating with peers in newsroom‑style teams, and building your portfolio through live briefs and industry‑connected assignments. That means you’ll leave not just with theory, but with tangible work showing what you can do.
Here’s how your learning will come alive in this programme:
You’ll work in specialised newsroom facilities where software like Avid iNews, Avid NewsCutter, Adobe Audition and QuarkXPress are used — so you’ll become comfortable with the exact tools used in the industry.
You’ll participate in news‑day simulations in a digital multimedia newsroom, covering broadcast (TV & radio) and online journalism with deadlines, team roles and real‑world briefs.
You’ll have the opportunity to specialise in reporting areas such as foreign affairs, health & science, business & finance, or data journalism — including field‑work for up to four weeks in some specialism modules.
You’ll benefit from the location: MediaCity, a creative hub housing the BBC and ITV among others — meaning industry connections, guest speakers, and a professional environment right on your doorstep.
You’ll graduate with a professional portfolio of work — stories published, broadcasts produced, and digital content created — giving you a strong résumé when you start job hunting
Graduates from this MA emerge equipped to work as journalists, multimedia content producers or digital communications specialists — often deploying their skills internationally or in specialist reporting roles. With a strong professional portfolio developed during the course, you’ll be ready to step into roles such as digital journalist, foreign correspondent, social media content lead or media analyst.
