MA Media and Politics

12 Months On Campus Masters Program

University of Liverpool

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how the media shapes politics — and how political power shapes the media — the MA Media and Politics at the University of Liverpool is an ideal choice. This one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) program explores the global relationship between media, communication, and political systems, giving you the skills to analyse and influence today’s fast-changing information landscape.

Curriculum Structure

Semester 1: Building Core Foundations
You’ll begin with the fundamentals that connect politics and media. Core modules like Research Methods in Media and Politics (COMM747) train you in both qualitative and quantitative research, while Media and Politics: Theories and Cases A (COMM764) helps you explore key debates and real-world case studies across different countries. You’ll also choose two optional modules — ranging from Strategic Communication and Screen Cultures to Big Data and Society — allowing you to shape your learning around your own interests.

Semester 2: Applying Knowledge to Real-World Issues
Next, you’ll go deeper into how political, social, and economic forces interact through media. The core module Media and Politics: Economy and Society A (COMM762) explores media ownership, policy, and power structures, preparing you to think critically about real-world dynamics. You’ll pick two more electives — perhaps focusing on Digital Media Audiences, Global Journalism, or AI and Communication — before undertaking your independent dissertation, where you’ll research a political or media topic that truly inspires you.

Reputation

The University of Liverpool is internationally respected for its research in digital politics and media democracy. Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The MA Media and Politics at the University of Liverpool gives you far more than just theory — it’s about exploring how communication truly shapes the world around us. You’ll get to analyse global media systems, political messaging, and digital platforms through hands-on research, interactive workshops, and real-world projects. By the time you graduate, you’ll be confident in turning complex political and media ideas into meaningful insight.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience throughout the course:

  • Interactive workshops and small-group sessions – Most classes are taught in discussion-based seminars where you’ll debate ideas, share perspectives, and work closely with classmates on group projects and presentations.

  • Digital and analytical skills – Modules such as Research Methods in Media & Politics, Big Data and Society, and Data Visualisation introduce you to the tools used to analyse political communication and online influence, helping you gain practical data and digital media skills.

  • Independent dissertation project – You’ll design and conduct your own research on a topic that excites you — whether that’s media bias, online activism, or political communication strategies — supported by expert supervision from Liverpool’s media and politics specialists.

  • Research-connected teaching – The course links closely with the Centre for Digital Politics, Media and Democracy (DigiPol), where academics share their ongoing research on topics like digital campaigning and media manipulation.

  • Real-world assessments – Instead of just writing essays, you’ll produce reports, presentations, case studies, and media analyses — the kind of work employers value in communication and policy roles.

  • Career development support – Through the university’s Career Studio and School of the Arts employability sessions, you’ll get guidance on building a professional portfolio and exploring roles in journalism, public affairs, or digital strategy.
