The MSc Advancing Practice program has been created in response to the fast-changing landscape of health and social care at the local and national levels. Over the past few years, there has been a significant shift in the boundaries between different groups of health and social care professionals, which has led to a growing need for educational programs that support the development of advanced-level practice.
The program provides an opportunity for inter-professional learning and includes modules that embed advanced practice within both academic and practical learning environments. This approach will help students enhance their proficiency in advanced clinical practice.
The program has been developed with the understanding that postgraduate-level practitioners need to be able to analyze and challenge information from various sources and disciplines. It is essential for them to possess skills related to critical appraisal and to use, adapt, and advance methods of inquiry that are appropriate to their field. Engaging in critical debate and problem-solving at a complex level, as well as working independently, are all critical components of leading practice and ensuring that practitioners are fit for purpose and fit for practice.
The program includes a range of designated modules that allow students and their employers (if the studies are employer-funded) to consider the needs of their service and the specific learning needs required to advance their practice. The program also offers a flexible approach to developing knowledge and skills.
Students can choose their pathway from the range of designated modules, with the exception of compulsory modules required for the award. If students do not wish to complete the full program, they may apply directly for, or exit with, either a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma in Advancing Practice, provided they have completed the compulsory modules.
It is important to note that some designated modules have specific admissions criteria, and attention should be paid to these criteria when making module selections.
