Program Overview
The MASt in Mathematics (Pure Mathematics) is a rigorous, nine-month taught master’s programme designed for students who want to deepen their mathematical understanding and prepare for advanced research or high-level careers. It offers intensive exposure to advanced mathematical theory beyond undergraduate level — ideal for those passionate about pure mathematics, theoretical work, or academic/research pathways. 

Curriculum structure
Since this is a one-year (nine-month) programme, students take a set of advanced lecture courses and complete an extended mathematical essay rather than follow a year-by-year breakdown. 

In this course you will —

  • Study a broad and flexible range of advanced topics in pure mathematics: for example, algebra, analysis, topology, number theory — with roughly 80 lectures offered each year across various strands (pure math, statistics, applied math, theoretical physics) allowing you to customise your studies to your interests. 

  • Engage in deep, independent work through a substantial extended essay — giving you experience in self-directed research and preparing you for PhD-level work or roles requiring strong theoretical and problem-solving skills. 

Focus areas
Pure mathematics — especially advanced algebra, analysis, topology, number theory, and other foundational mathematical theory.

Learning outcomes
Graduates will have: (1) mastered advanced mathematical material beyond the undergraduate level, (2) developed a high capacity for independent study and sophisticated mathematical problem-solving, and (3) written an extended essay demonstrating their ability to carry out self-driven mathematical research. 

Professional alignment (accreditation)
The MASt is awarded by the University of Cambridge’s Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS) under the overall Faculty of Mathematics. The degree is formally recognised as a master’s-level qualification (HECoS code 100403, level 7).

Reputation (employability / rankings)
The programme sits within the University of Cambridge — routinely ranked among the top universities globally for mathematics. The “Part III” (MASt/MMath) is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and rigorous master’s-level mathematics programmes worldwide, and is considered excellent preparation for doctoral study or other advanced mathematical careers.
