MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Heriot Watt University Edinburgh

Program Overview

This one-year programme gives you a complete, practical understanding of how hydrocarbon reservoirs are discovered, evaluated and managed — blending geoscience, engineering and data interpretation. It’s ideal for students who want to develop the technical skills needed to work in reservoir engineering, subsurface analysis or wider energy-resource roles.

Curriculum Structure

1-Year Full-Time MSc

  • You’ll begin the year with core subjects that build your foundation in reservoir behaviour. Modules such as Reservoir Concepts, Formation Evaluation, Reservoir Engineering and Reservoir Sedimentology introduce you to how reservoirs form, how to assess them and how to interpret geological and petrophysical data.
  • As the year progresses, you move into applied modules like Reservoir Simulation, Reservoir Geological Modelling, Geomechanics and Geophysics and Well Test Analysis. These give you hands-on experience building subsurface models, analysing well performance and understanding fluid flow through the reservoir.
  • The programme finishes with a major Field Evaluation Project and an Individual Project, where you combine all the skills you’ve learned to evaluate a reservoir development scenario and deliver a professional-standard assessment.

Focus areas: reservoir geoscience, reservoir engineering, formation evaluation, geological modelling, reservoir simulation, well testing and geomechanics.

Learning outcomes: strong ability to evaluate subsurface reservoirs; confidence in geological and petrophysical interpretation; hands-on competency with simulation and modelling tools; readiness for roles in reservoir engineering, subsurface analysis or energy-sector technical teams.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Delivered by Heriot-Watt’s Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering — a globally respected centre for reservoir engineering and subsurface sciences.

Reputation (employability rankings): Heriot-Watt is internationally known for its strength in petroleum and energy engineering, consistently recognised for producing graduates who meet industry standards and transition quickly into skilled roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Heriot-Watt, the MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management is built around practical, industry-focused training. You won’t just learn theory — you’ll work with real subsurface data, industry software and project scenarios that mirror the work of professional reservoir engineers and geoscientists. The programme is designed so you develop confidence using the same tools and workflows that energy companies use every day.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Use of industry-standard reservoir modelling and simulation software, giving you the chance to build geological models, run fluid-flow simulations and analyse formation behaviour with professional-grade tools.

  • Hands-on project work using real field datasets, especially in the Field Evaluation Project, where you interpret geological, petrophysical and production data to create a complete reservoir development assessment.

  • Collaborative group tasks that reflect the way real reservoir asset teams operate, helping you build teamwork and communication skills alongside your technical training.

  • Access to specialist computing facilities and dedicated geoenergy resources, supporting work in reservoir engineering, geological modelling and subsurface analysis.

  • Exposure to realistic reservoir-management challenges, including uncertainty analysis, well-test interpretation and development planning — allowing you to practise solving the kinds of problems faced in industry.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management often move straight into roles such as Reservoir Engineer, Production Technologist, Field Development Planner or Petrophysicist. Because the programme blends geology, engineering, modelling and hands-on project work, you finish the degree with the kind of practical, industry-ready skillset employers in the energy and subsurface sectors look for. Many students secure roles in upstream oil and gas, energy resource consulting, or subsurface engineering soon after graduating.

Here’s how Heriot-Watt supports your next steps:

  • Dedicated careers support: The university’s Careers Service offers tailored guidance for geoenergy and engineering students, including one-to-one advice, CV and interview coaching, and employer networking events that connect you directly with companies in the energy sector.

  • Strong employability record: Heriot-Watt consistently ranks among the UK’s top universities for graduate employability, with a high proportion of students progressing into skilled work or further study within months of finishing.

  • Close ties to industry: The programme is delivered through the Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering, which has long-standing connections with the oil, gas and wider energy industry. This keeps the curriculum closely aligned with real field practices and employer needs.

  • Long-term credibility: The degree is recognised internationally for its strong technical foundation in reservoir engineering and geoscience, giving you a qualification that holds value throughout your career.

  • Clear graduate destinations: Alumni go on to work in reservoir simulation, production optimisation, field development planning, and energy-resource consulting — roles that rely directly on the training this MSc provides.

Further Academic Progression:
If you want to continue your studies, the programme also provides an excellent foundation for a PhD in petroleum engineering, geoscience, reservoir modelling or broader geoenergy research. Many graduates choose research routes to specialise further or progress into academic and high-level technical roles.
