MSt in Philosophy of Physics

9 Months On Campus Masters Program

University of Oxford

Program Overview

The MSt in Philosophy of Physics at Oxford gives you the chance to explore the deep conceptual structure of modern physics — from quantum theory to space-time, thermodynamics and scientific explanation. It’s ideal for students from physics, mathematics or philosophy who want to understand not just how theories work, but what they mean at the most fundamental level.

Curriculum Structure

Because this is a nine-month programme, the course moves quickly but with plenty of guidance through supervisions, seminars and small-group teaching. You’ll study core topics in Philosophy of Physics — such as quantum theory, space and time, symmetry, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics — alongside Philosophy of Science, which broadens your understanding of scientific reasoning and theory structure. You also choose one elective (for example Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophical Logic or Philosophy of Mathematics), allowing you to shape the programme around your interests. Assessment is based on four substantial essays, giving you space to develop your own arguments in depth.

Focus Areas

Philosophy of quantum theory; Space, time and symmetry; Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics; Philosophy of science; Elective specialism such as logic, metaphysics, mind or mathematics

Learning Outcomes

Advanced understanding of the conceptual foundations of physics; ability to analyse and critique physical theories; strong skills in philosophical argumentation and writing; readiness for further research in philosophy of physics or related areas

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Delivered by Oxford’s Faculty of Philosophy — one of the world’s leading centres for philosophy of physics — ensuring strong academic credibility and preparation for research.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Oxford consistently ranks among the top global universities in both philosophy and the physical sciences, and this programme is recognised internationally as a rigorous pathway toward doctoral study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Studying the MSt in Philosophy of Physics at Oxford means stepping into a community where philosophical argument, scientific insight and rigorous reasoning come together every day. You’ll learn through close supervisions, lively seminars and small-group teaching — the kind of learning environment where you can test ideas, refine your thinking and build your confidence as an emerging philosopher of science. On top of that, you have access to some of the richest academic resources in the world, so every debate, essay and research question is supported by the tools you need.

To give you a clearer sense of what this looks like in practice, you’ll benefit from:

  • The Bodleian Libraries, offering one of the most extensive collections anywhere — with vast holdings in physics, philosophy, logic, mathematics and the history of science.

  • Graduate-level teaching through lectures, seminars and personalised supervisions, letting you work closely with experts in philosophy of physics and philosophy of science.

  • A dedicated Philosophy of Physics seminar series and a wider calendar of talks and discussion groups, giving you regular exposure to new ideas, visiting scholars and active debates in the field.

  • A strong college and faculty community, where you can join reading groups, informal discussions and peer-led academic activities that enrich your learning.

  • Digital tools and IT support, ensuring you can access research databases, manage academic sources, and work efficiently on essays and extended research projects.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this MSt often step into paths that blend rigorous thinking with a deep understanding of science. Many continue into advanced research, join academic projects, or take on analytical and writing roles where conceptual clarity is essential. Common career directions include PhD/DPhil researcher, academic or teaching roles, research positions in philosophy of science or physics foundations, and analytical or consultancy roles in intellectually demanding sectors.

Oxford supports you strongly as you plan your next steps:

  • The Oxford University Careers Service provides one-to-one guidance, workshops, and access to a wide range of graduate job and internship opportunities.

  • The Faculty of Philosophy offers tailored support for students aiming for academia, helping with research plans, writing samples, interview practice and academic applications.

  • Your qualification carries long-term credibility, as it comes from one of the world’s most respected philosophy faculties, particularly renowned for work in philosophy of physics.

  • Many graduates successfully progress to doctoral study at Oxford or other leading universities, or build careers in areas such as publishing, research support, policy analysis or scientific communication.

Further Academic Progression:
Most students use the MSt as a direct springboard into PhD or DPhil research in philosophy or philosophy of physics, focusing on areas like quantum theory, space-time, thermodynamics or scientific explanation. Others continue into the second year of the BPhil in Philosophy, or branch into interdisciplinary research connecting physics, philosophy, mathematics or cognitive science.
