Program Overview

The MSc Biotechnology (Healthcare Technologies) at Bath equips you with the skills to bring innovative healthcare solutions to life — from designing biosensors to developing new drugs or tissue engineering techniques. It’s ideal if you’re passionate about applying biotechnology to real-world health challenges and want hands-on experience in cutting-edge labs.

Curriculum Structure

This one-year programme combines taught modules with hands-on projects, giving you both theoretical knowledge and practical lab experience.

  • Semester 1: You’ll start with Advances in Molecular Biotechnology, learning key techniques like gene editing and molecular diagnostics, while exploring the latest innovations in biotechnology. At the same time, Broadening Horizons encourages you to look at the bigger picture, including entrepreneurship, sustainability, and science communication.

  • Semester 2: You’ll specialise in one of three areas: BiosensorsTissue Engineering, or Drug Discovery: From Target to Medicine, letting you focus on the aspect of healthcare biotechnology that excites you most.

  • Research Projects: You’ll take part in a group lab project (Research Project 1A) to apply CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing techniques, followed by a summer individual project (Research Project 2) that gives you in-depth experience in a research lab, helping you develop both technical and independent research skills.

Focus Areas

Healthcare biotechnology, biosensors, tissue engineering, drug discovery, molecular biotech, sustainability

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, you’ll be confident in lab techniques like CRISPR-mediated gene editing, understand how to design and apply biosensors or drugs, consider the ethical and environmental implications of your work, and have led both group and individual research projects.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

While the course doesn’t hold a specific professional accreditation, it’s closely designed with industry input, ensuring your skills are directly relevant to careers in healthcare and biotech.
