The MSc Economics at Nottingham Business School is designed for students who want to apply economic thinking to real-world challenges, from global trade to behavioural finance. It’s ideal for graduates from economics, business, or quantitative disciplines who want to deepen their analytical skills and gain hands-on experience using economic tools in a professional context.


Curriculum Structure

Semester 1

This semester builds your core understanding of economic theory and quantitative analysis. You’ll study:

  • Principles of Economics – covering micro and macroeconomic frameworks and their application to policy and business.
  • Behavioural Applications in Economics and Finance – exploring how psychological insights influence economic and financial decision-making.
  • Using Quantitative Data in Economic Analysis – developing statistical and econometric skills using real-world datasets.

Semester 2
You’ll apply your knowledge to global and policy contexts, with modules such as:

  • International Trade and Investment – analysing trade flows, investment decisions, and global economic integration.
  • Economic Evaluation Techniques – learning cost-benefit analysis and impact assessment for public and private sector projects.
  • Economic Analysis of Global Issues – applying economic tools to challenges like inequality, climate change, and development.

Semester 3
This is your opportunity to specialise and gain hands-on experience. You’ll choose one of the following:

  • Consultancy Experience Project – work in teams on a live brief from a real organisation.
  • Business Research Project – conduct independent research on a topic of your choice.
  • Global Experience Project – apply your skills in an international context.

If you opt for the two-year route, you’ll also complete a Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience, spending up to 48 weeks in a professional setting.
