International Political Economy MA

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

The MA International Political Economy at Sheffield explores how politics and economics intersect across global systems, equipping students to analyse power, policy, and inequality in a rapidly changing world. It’s ideal for students who want to understand the forces shaping international trade, development, and governance — and apply that knowledge in policy, research, or advocacy.

Curriculum Structure

Semester 1
Students begin with core modules that establish a strong foundation in theory and global context. International Political Economy introduces key debates around globalisation, trade, and finance, while The Political Economy of Globalisation examines how institutions and ideologies shape global economic outcomes. These modules are taught by active researchers and encourage critical engagement with contemporary issues.

Semester 2
The second semester offers deeper exploration through modules like Global Governance and The Politics of Development. Students analyse how power operates in international organisations, and how development strategies impact inequality and sustainability. Optional modules such as Contemporary Global Security or The Politics of International Law allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests.

Summer (Dissertation)
Students complete an independent research project on a topic of their choice, applying theoretical frameworks and empirical analysis to a focused question in international political economy. Supervised by experts, this dissertation is a chance to showcase originality and policy relevance — often aligned with career goals in government, NGOs, or international institutions.
