Program Overview

 

This MSc equips students with advanced training in economic theory, econometrics, and development policy, preparing them to tackle global challenges in poverty, inequality, and sustainable growth. It’s ideal for students with a background in economics or related disciplines who want to work in international development, policy analysis, or research.


Curriculum Structure

Term 1 (Autumn)
Students begin with core theoretical and analytical foundations. You’ll study Microeconomics (20 credits), which covers consumer and producer behaviour, and Macroeconomics (30 credits), focusing on growth models and fiscal policy. Econometrics (30 credits) introduces statistical techniques for analysing development data, using tools like Stata and R.

Term 2 (Spring)
The second term deepens your understanding of development issues and policy frameworks. You’ll take Risk, Uncertainty and Information (10 credits), which explores decision-making under uncertainty, and Research Methods in Economics (10 credits), preparing you for empirical analysis. You’ll also choose an optional module such as Development Economic Policy, International Trade Policy, or Economics of Financial Markets to tailor your learning.

Term 3 (Summer)
Students complete a dissertation (60 credits), applying development economics theory and empirical methods to a topic of their choice. This capstone project is supported by faculty supervision and may involve policy evaluation, field data analysis, or theoretical modelling.
