Program Overview

The MA Economics at the University of Essex is designed for students who want to build a strong foundation in economic theory and quantitative methods, especially if their undergraduate background isn’t in economics. It suits aspiring analysts, consultants, and policy professionals who want to understand how markets, governments, and institutions shape economic outcomes.

Curriculum Structure

Autumn Term
You’ll begin with core modules that introduce the fundamentals of economic analysis. Introductory Microeconomics explores how individuals and firms make decisions under different market conditions, while Introductory Macroeconomics covers national income accounting, fiscal and monetary policy, and the trade-off between inflation and unemployment. You’ll also study Introductory Econometrics, which equips you with statistical tools to analyse economic data using techniques like linear regression and hypothesis testing.

Spring Term
Building on the foundations, you’ll choose from advanced modules such as International Trade and Financial Economics, Management Economics and Market Analysis, and Public Choice. These modules allow you to explore global trade dynamics, firm strategy, and the role of government in economic decision-making. You’ll also continue developing your quantitative skills through coursework and lab sessions.

Summer Term
You’ll undertake a supervised research project or dissertation, applying your analytical skills to a specific economic issue. This is your opportunity to produce original work, drawing on the methods and insights gained throughout the course.
