MSc Economics

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

The MSc Economics offers rigorous training in economic theory and quantitative methods, ideal for students aiming to pursue careers in consultancy, finance, government, or academic research. It combines core analytical skills with applied modules that explore real-world policy and market challenges.

Curriculum Structure

Semester 1: Core Economic Foundations
Students begin with Microeconomic Theory and Macroeconomic Theory, which provide a deep understanding of individual decision-making, market structures, and aggregate economic behaviour. Econometric Theory introduces the statistical tools needed to analyse data and test economic hypotheses, laying the groundwork for empirical research.

Semester 2: Applied Analysis and Specialisation
In the second semester, students take Applied Econometrics, where they work with real-world datasets and learn advanced regression techniques. Electives such as Behavioural Economic Theory, Development Policy Analysis, and International Trade Theory allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, from global trade to policy design.

Summer Term: Independent Research and Dissertation
The final phase is a 60-credit Economics Dissertation, where students conduct original research on a topic of their choice. Under expert supervision, they apply both theoretical and empirical tools to investigate issues such as labour markets, macroeconomic policy, or development economics.
