International Relations MA

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Sussex

Program Overview

The MA International Relations at the University of Sussex offers a deep, critical understanding of the major global challenges of our time — from conflict and climate change to peace, human rights and the roles of states and international actors. You’ll study world politics through major theoretical frameworks and gain insights into how governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations shape global outcomes, making this degree ideal for future leaders in policy, research, diplomacy and international affairs.

Curriculum structure

Foundations & Core Theory

In your first phase of study, you’ll build a solid foundation in Foundations of World Politics and International Relations Theory, where you’ll explore how global politics has evolved historically and conceptually. These modules help you critically reflect on the complexities of world politics, analysing power structures and theoretical frameworks such as realism, liberalism and critical approaches that frame contemporary global issues. You’ll also undertake Research Methods and Professional Skills (IR), developing key academic and analytical skills that prepare you for advanced research.

Advanced Issues & Dissertation

As you progress, the programme culminates in an independent Dissertation in International Relations, where you apply your skills to a research topic of your choice — synthesising theory and empirical analysis. Through this project, you’ll demonstrate your ability to engage with cutting-edge questions in international politics, such as security, development and governance, under expert supervision.

Focus areas: international relations theory, foundations of world politics, global governance, human rights in global politics, regional order and insecurity, research methods and dissertation.

Learning outcomes: advanced theoretical knowledge of international relations, research and analytical skills, the ability to critically evaluate global political issues, and preparedness for careers in policy, diplomacy and international organisations.

Professional alignment (accreditation): While this programme is primarily academic, the University of Sussex’s Department of International Relations is one of the UK’s largest dedicated IR departments, recognised for its research and teaching excellence, enhancing your academic and professional credibility.
