MA International Public Relations and Global Communications Management

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Cardiff University

Program Overview

The MA International Public Relations and Global Communications Management at Cardiff equips you with both theoretical understanding and industry-ready skills in global communications, media relations, brand & corporate communications, and strategic PR — ideal for students wishing to build a career in international PR, media, corporate communications or brand management. The program is designed to suit both those with previous communications experience and “conversion” students from different academic backgrounds, since prior PR knowledge is not required.

Curriculum structure

Duration / Format

  • 1 year, full-time.

What you will study

  • In the taught part of the degree (Autumn + Spring), you take core modules such as “International Public Relations and Communication Theory”, “International Public Relations and Communication Management”, “International Public Relations and Communication Research”, and “International Public Relations and Communication Practice” — these provide you with a solid foundation in PR theory, global communications strategy, research methods, media-relations practice, and communications management.

  • Alongside the core, the programme lets you choose optional modules to tailor your MA to your interests — for example modules like “Corporate Communication”, “Brand Communication”, “Culture and Communication”, or more specialist options such as “Data-driven Communication” or “Purpose-led Communication” — letting you hone in on areas like branding, global corporate comms, cultural communications or data-driven/digital-era PR.

  • In the final part, you complete a project-based dissertation, which involves in-depth research on a PR or communications topic of your choice. This gives you a chance to apply your learning — combining theory, research, and practical insight — and produce a substantial piece of work that can help define your specialisation or professional direction.

Focus areas:

“Global public relations; corporate communication; media relations and communications strategy; brand & culture communications; data-driven and purpose-led communication; communication research methods; global media & communications environment.”

Learning outcomes:

“You will gain a deep understanding of international PR and communications theory and practice, develop advanced skills in communications management, media relations, research and strategic planning, and produce a substantial research-oriented communications project — preparing you for professional roles in PR, corporate communications, media, brand management or global communications consultancy.”

Professional alignment (accreditation):

The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) — giving the degree formal professional recognition and aligning it with industry standards.

Reputation (employability / rankings):

  • The offering is part of the institution’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture, widely recognized among top UK communications/media-education providers.

  • As a CIPR-accredited conversion-style MA, it’s especially suitable for international students or graduates from non-PR backgrounds who wish to pivot their careers into global communications, PR, media, or brand strategy, thereby enhancing employability in a competitive global field.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Cardiff, this MA doesn’t just cover theory — you’ll build practical communications skills, work on real-life style PR/communications assignments, and benefit from a campus location and institutional backing that connect you directly to the media industry and global communications networks. It’s designed so theory and practice go hand in hand.

Here are the main experiential-learning components and resources you’ll benefit from:

  • Faculty that blends academics + practitioners: The programme is taught by a mix of academic staff and communications/PR practitioners — giving you exposure to current industry practices, real-world insights, and professional-level mentoring.

  • Practice-based assignments & industry-relevant projects: Coursework and assignments are designed to mimic real-world PR/communications work — planning communications strategies, media-relations simulations, campaign design, crisis-communications planning, corporate-communication strategy etc.

  • Access to purpose-built facilities in the heart of Cardiff’s media district: The School of Journalism, Media and Culture is housed in a modern building located in Cardiff’s media quarter — right next to the local headquarters of major media organisations — offering an environment closely linked to media & communications industry.

  • Optional modules that reflect real-world communications demands: Through electives such as Corporate Communication, Digital Communications Management, Brand Communication, Purpose-led Communication, etc., you get to explore specialisations aligned with current industry needs — from digital media to global corporate communications strategy.

  • Support for placements, internships and employability via university’s work-experience services: Cardiff University maintains a placements & internships portal — offering short-term internship opportunities (paid and unpaid), industry placements and work experience across a range of sectors, which MA students can use to gain hands-on professional experience while studying or after finishing.
