This MA gives you a deep understanding of contemporary global politics — how world order is made, how it functions, and what challenges it faces today. It’s ideal both for students with prior politics/IR background and for those new to the subject, but curious about global governance, international conflicts, global security and social-political change.
Curriculum structure
The programme is typically completed over one year (full-time), or over two years part-time — giving you a compact but rich journey into international relations.
In the first part of your studies, you’ll tackle a core module, Debating International Relations, where you explore foundational theories and concepts in IR — from classical realism to critical and sociological approaches — and learn to apply them to current global events.
You’ll also engage with other modules that reflect the strengths of Sheffield’s research-led teaching: you might study global security, non-Western IR, governance, or sociological and critical approaches to international politics.
As you progress, there will be opportunity to choose optional modules or focus areas (depending on interests) — enabling you to tailor your learning towards security studies, global governance, environmental politics, human rights or regional politics.
Focus areas
“Global governance & security; critical and sociological approaches to IR; contemporary global politics; global environmental & political change; regional dynamics and non-Western perspectives”
Learning outcomes
“You will master a broad set of theoretical frameworks to analyse global politics, apply critical and conventional concepts to understand international conflict, governance and change, and build research skills capable of evaluating contemporary challenges — equipped to think globally, critically, and independently.”
You won’t just sit in lectures and read theory: Sheffield makes sure your MA experience is embedded in real academic research, intensive discussion, and broader employability support. Through seminars, close supervision, and access to top-notch university facilities, you’ll be equipped to engage with real-world global issues, develop research projects, and collaborate with peers and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

Access to world-class library & study facilities: As a Sheffield student you’ll be able to use the highly-regarded library system, including the 24/7 computing and library resource centre with extensive study spaces, books and digital research materials — essential for your dissertation research, coursework and group projects.
Opportunities for work-experience, internships and placements: Through the university’s broader careers & employability services, students have access to internships, volunteering, part-time roles or virtual work-experience — flexible ways to complement academic learning with real-world experience.
Diverse peer community & global perspectives: The MA attracts a diverse cohort — both those with prior IR/social sciences experience and those new to the field. This gives you a rich, multicultural dialogue environment, helping you to understand issues from multiple viewpoints and prepare for global work or research contexts.
Graduates from this MA often step into roles that tap their global-thinking, analytical and policy-oriented skills — such as Diplomatic Service Officer, Policy Analyst, International Development / Aid Professional, or Research & Public Affairs Specialist. Thanks to Sheffield’s strong reputation and support services, you’ll leave ready for careers in government, NGOs, think-tanks, global companies or international organisations.
