Education (International Education) - MA

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Birmingham

Program Overview

The MA Education at University of Birmingham offers a flexible, research-informed master’s that allows you to study education from global, social-justice and policy-oriented perspectives, making it ideal for those who want to influence education systems, work in international education, or pursue academic research. The programme is designed to let you tailor your studies toward specialisms such as inclusion, social justice, international/comparative education, leadership or policy — depending on your interests and career goals.

Curriculum Structure

Since this is a one-year full-time master’s:

  • In the course, you will take core and elective modules depending on your chosen focus: for instance, the module “Understanding School Improvement” (for those focusing on leadership / management / school effectiveness) provides a theoretically and evidence-informed examination of how teaching and school organisation affect student learning, inclusion, and outcomes — equipping you with the ability to critically assess educational policies and practices.

  • Alongside core modules, you’ll choose from a wide range of optional modules under various specialisms — such as inclusion & disability, social justice, comparative/international education, policy & governance, leadership etc. This lets you shape the programme around your interests (e.g. global education, inclusion, leadership, policy).

  • You’ll complete independent research — a master’s-level dissertation or project — that allows you to engage deeply with a topic of your choice, combining theory, policy analysis, and possibly comparative/international perspectives. This gives you a chance to contribute original insight and build a research profile useful for future education-policy, NGO, or academic work.

Focus areas

“International and Comparative Education; Education Policy & Governance; Social Justice & Inclusion in Education; School Improvement & Leadership; Disability & Special Educational Needs; Global Education Systems; Education Theory & Research Methods; Inclusion and Equity in Education.”

Learning outcomes

“You will acquire critical understanding of global and comparative education systems, gain competence in analyzing education policy and institutional practice, build skills to evaluate and lead school or system-level educational change, develop capacity for rigorous research, and be prepared for careers in education policy, leadership, international development, inclusion and social justice in educational contexts.”

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The MA is delivered by the University of Birmingham’s School of Education, which is internationally recognised and among the UK’s leading centres for education research and training. Graduating from this programme gives you credentials widely accepted by education institutions, NGOs, international-education organisations, policy bodies, and research institutions.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you join this MA, you’re stepping into a learning environment designed for flexibility, research-informed teaching, and real-world relevance — combining seminars, workshops, independent research, and access to rich library & archival resources to support education-policy, comparative education or inclusion-focused work.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Diverse learning formats — seminars, lectures, workshops and online learning: The programme is delivered through a mix of seminars, lectures and workshops, complemented by virtual-learning components. This ensures your learning is interactive, discussion-driven, and adaptable — ideal for engaging with global education issues or policy work.

  • Wide choice of modules & specialisations — real world relevance: The MA lets you choose from different pathways — such as Comparative and International Perspectives, Leadership, Inclusion and Disability, or Social Justice — allowing you to tailor the degree to your interests or future career goals (in policy, international education, inclusive education, leadership etc.).

  • Independent research and dissertation opportunity: As part of the MA, you will conduct a substantial independent research project or dissertation — enabling you to explore education issues in depth, use empirical data, and produce original analysis. That gives you hands-on experience similar to what you’d do in professional research, policy analysis, or PhD-level work.

  • Access to extensive library & archival facilities at the university: The University of Birmingham has multiple libraries and research-oriented collections (including historic archives, rare-book collections, e-resources) under its Library Services — giving you access to diverse sources (books, journals, archives, databases) vital for quality research in education, policy, and comparative studies.

  • Supportive academic community & research-oriented School of Education: The School of Education at Birmingham is internationally recognised, with many academics, research centres, and postgraduate courses — meaning you’ll be learning and researching alongside experts and peers, which enriches discussion, supervision and collaborative learning.
