MSc Global and Comparative Politics

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

The MSc Global and Comparative Politics is a one-year master’s programme that helps you understand why politics works so differently from one country to another and what this means for democracies, governments and social outcomes around the world. You’ll explore how political actors — from leaders and voters to parties and protest movements — behave in different settings, and you’ll learn to analyse the consequences that political institutions have on issues like stability, development and representation.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Full-time, one year)
Throughout this single intensive year, you’ll start by building a strong conceptual grounding in the main theoretical approaches used in comparative politics, helping you think critically about how systems compare and contrast globally. Core teaching introduces you to classic debates alongside contemporary issues, and you’ll be able to choose from a range of optional modules that let you tailor your degree — for example through topics such as Global Environmental Issues, International Security, Conflict Resolution and International Relations.

Focus areas: comparative political behaviour, political institutions, international politics, global policy issues
Learning outcomes: ability to analyse political systems comparatively, strong critical thinking skills, advanced understanding of global political debates
Professional alignment (accreditation): This programme isn’t tied to a professional body but equips you with research and analytical skills that many employers value in policy, international organisations and analysis roles.
Reputation (employability rankings): The Department of Government at Essex is widely recognised for its research power in politics and international studies, ranking highly across national research assessments.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes the MSc in Global and Comparative Politics feel so engaging is that you won’t just be memorising theories — you’ll learn to apply them directly to real political questions and debates around the world. Teaching is shaped around discussion, interpretation of global case studies and research-driven projects, so you literally use the tools political scientists rely on in practice:

  • Research-led seminar teaching, where you actively discuss and compare political systems and behaviour across countries

  • Optional modules tailored to your interests — whether that’s security, international relations or environmental politics

  • Engagement with current global issues, linking classroom concepts to contemporary political events

  • Guided independent research, allowing you to draw together ideas and evidence for your dissertation project
