MSc Politics, Policy and Leadership

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Lincoln

Program Overview

Year 1 (Full-time, one year / Part-time, two years)
In your first year, you’ll get grounded in core ideas about political leadership and public policy, learning what effective leadership looks like in different organisational and political arenas. Modules like Political Leadership, Politics and Public Policy and Public and Political Leadership in Practice bring theory to life through case studies and contributions from guest practitioners.

As you move through the programme, you’ll build both qualitative and quantitative research skills — essential for analysing political behaviour and policy outcomes — through dedicated modules in research methods and data analysis. You’ll also have the chance to choose optional modules such as Comparative Legislatures, Global Issues in Gender and Sexuality or Globalisation, depending on your interests.

The year culminates in a negotiated learning project or independent research, where you’ll bring together everything you’ve learned to work on a real policy or leadership challenge relevant to your goals.

Focus areas: political leadership, policy analysis, research methods, public engagement, global and comparative political topics
Learning outcomes: ability to apply theory to real leadership and policy problems, advanced research and analytical skills, confidence in interpreting political data and communicating insights
Professional alignment (accreditation): This MSc isn’t tied to a specific professional body but develops highly transferable skills in leadership, policy analysis, research methods and evidence-based decision-making — valuable in public service, consultancy, research and advocacy roles.
Reputation (employability rankings): The School of Social and Political Sciences at Lincoln is known for strong research engagement and real-world relevance, with academics actively contributing to policy discussions and legislative research.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes the MSc Politics, Policy and Leadership stand out is its blend of academic rigour and practical experience. You won’t just study theories — you’ll apply them in ways that reflect real-world political practice and leadership challenges:

  • Interactive workshop-style learning, designed to build both analytical and interpersonal leadership skills through participatory sessions.

  • Guest practitioner engagement, where speakers from political practice share insights and interact with students on leadership and policy topics.

  • Core research training in both qualitative and quantitative methods, giving you confidence working with data, survey design and analytical tools.

  • Negotiated learning project or independent research — an applied or traditional research project that lets you work on a topic meaningful to your career or interests.

  • Optional modules reflecting global and comparative topics, such as Globalisation and Global Politics & Religion, for a wider perspective on political phenomena.

  • Access to Lincoln’s academic resources, including political science guides, library collections and research support.
