MSc Psychology

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Sheffield Hallam University

Program Overview

The MSc Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is a one-year conversion course that provides students from non-psychology backgrounds with a solid foundation in core psychological theory, research methods, and applied practice. It suits graduates seeking to gain the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society and prepare for professional or academic psychology roles.

Curriculum Structure:
In the first (and only) year, students explore Biological Basis of Behaviour, Cognitive Psychology, and Social Psychology: Perspectives & Topics, building a broad understanding of how the mind works and how we relate to others. Simultaneously, they strengthen their methodological skills in Research Methods Essentials, learning to design studies, analyse data, and reflect on ethical research practice. In the later part of the course, modules such as Personality & Individual Differences and Practical Applications in Developmental Psychology allow them to apply theory to real-world contexts across lifespan development. Their learning culminates in a Research Project in Psychology, where they design and carry out original empirical research tailored to their interests.

Focus areas:
“cognitive psychology; social behaviour; individual differences; developmental psychology; research methods”

Learning outcomes:
Graduates will be able to critically evaluate psychological theory, apply advanced research methods, conduct independent research, and articulate professional or academic insights into human behaviour.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
This MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and qualifies students for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC).
