Language Sciences: Neuroscience of Language and Speech MSc

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University College London

Program Overview

The MSc Language Sciences: Neuroscience of Language & Speech at UCL explores how the brain supports language production, comprehension, and speech from an interdisciplinary neuroscience, linguistics, and psychology perspective. It suits students from linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, or speech sciences who want to pursue research, academia, or industry roles at the intersection of language and the brain.

Curriculum Structure:
In the first part of the course, students complete core modules like Topics and Methods in Language Sciences and Fundamental Statistics: Statistical and Causal Reasoning, where they build a rigorous foundation in language-science theory and quantitative analysis. They also study elective modules such as Introduction to the Brain and Imaging the Brain and Neuroscience of Language, giving them direct insight into brain imaging techniques and neural basis of language processing. In the final stage, students carry out a Dissertation / Project in Language Science, designing and executing independent research under supervision.

Focus areas: “Neural mechanisms of speech and language; brain imaging; computational and cognitive linguistics; independent research.”
Learning outcomes: “Understand neurobiology of language, apply advanced statistical and imaging methods, and conduct original research in language sciences.”
Professional alignment (accreditation): While not a clinical qualification, the programme prepares graduates for PhD study, research roles in academia or industry, and specialist jobs in speech technology or communication research.
Reputation: UCL’s Division of Psychology & Language Sciences is globally respected, and its Language Sciences MSc is highly ranked for neuroscience and linguistics research.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme focuses on applying behavioural science theories to real-world challenges through practical projects and hands-on research. Students develop intervention design and evaluation skills using UCL's specialist labs and research centres. This applied approach is delivered through:

  • UCL's Behavioural Research Labs: Access to the Bridget Dolan Laboratory and other experimental facilities for designing and testing behavioural interventions.

  • Industry and Policy Projects: Opportunities to work on live briefs with external partners through the UCL Centre for Behaviour Change.

  • Substantial Research Project: A major dissertation where students design, implement, and evaluate a full behaviour change intervention.

  • Practical Workshops: Hands-on training in qualitative and quantitative research methods, including data analysis software like R and SPSS.
