MSc Health Psychology

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

The MSc Health Psychology at the University of Manchester offers a BPS-accredited curriculum focused on how psychological theory applies to health, illness, and behavioural change. It suits students who want to work as health psychologists or pursue further research in health settings.

Curriculum Structure:
Over the course, students study units such as Critical, Creative & Comprehensive Research Methodologies and Critical, Creative & Comprehensive Research Analyses, which develop advanced quantitative and qualitative research skills. The module Health and Society explores how cultural, social, and policy factors influence health, while Mind and Body investigates psychobiological mechanisms of illness. In Health Behaviour Change, students apply theory to design interventions, and through Psychology in Clinical Practice 1, they examine how psychological principles function in health-care settings. They also complete a 60-credit Dissertation, undertaking an independent empirical research project.

Focus areas: “Health behaviour; psychobiology; social determinants of health; intervention design; research methods.”
Learning outcomes: “Apply health-psychology theory, design and evaluate behaviour change interventions, conduct research using mixed methods, and understand psychobiological and societal contributors to illness.”
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS); prepares students for Stage 2 health-psychologist training and HCPC registration.
Reputation: The University of Manchester is ranked #7 in the UK for Psychology (QS 2024).
