Program Overview

SOAS's MSc Public Policy and Management develops your capacity to understand, analyse and manage organisations in the public sector, combining state-of-the-art theories and techniques to improve public service performance. You will gain practical skills to design and implement systems of public service delivery, to apply digital technologies to public services, to lead innovation and change, and to manage public finances, while engaging with issues from healthcare and education to climate change, migration and poverty reduction. This programme is designed to help you start a career in government and public sector agencies, or to strengthen your prospects for an improved career trajectory. Structure: 180 credits in total, comprising 120 taught credits and a 60‑credit dissertation; modules include compulsory and optional units, with 15 or 30 credit options and up to 30 credits from open options, and not all optional modules are offered every year. Focus areas Learning outcomes: The programme will develop your capacity to understand, analyse and manage organisations in the public sector, with state-of-the-art knowledge of theories and techniques for making public sector entities perform efficiently; you will learn to design and implement public service delivery systems, to devise applications of digital technologies to public services, to lead innovation and change, and to manage public financial resources. Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

SOAS MSc Public Policy and Management emphasises practical, hands-on learning through a blend of lectures, tutorials and seminars, with opportunities to apply concepts to real world settings. A key experiential element is the collaboration with Practera delivering bespoke work-based learning projects that connect you with industry and public sector organisations to tackle live challenges. You will also participate in the Finance and Business Network Seminar series, offering talks from industry and public sector leaders with networking on campus and at industry HQ. You will have access to the SOAS Library with its extensive holdings and electronic resources to support research, and you will complete a 60-credit dissertation under supervision. Graduates leave with a coherent and solid knowledge of management and finance, with skills in statistics and computing, critical reasoning and analytical thinking, prepared to start a career in government and public sector agencies, or to strengthen their prospects for an improved career trajectory.
