SOAS University of London History

SOAS University is a public research university in London. Established in 1916, it received its royal charter and admitted its first student in 1917. The School of Oriental Studies was founded by the British state as an instrument to strengthen Britain’s commercial, political and military presence in Asia and Africa. With our vast repository of knowledge and expertise on our specialist regions, we are uniquely placed to inform and shape current thinking about the economic, political, cultural, security and religious challenges of our world.

SOAS University of London Programs, Courses, and Schools

SOAS University of London provides a range of university preparation and language improvement programmes for international students. The IFCELS department additionally runs a spread of programmes for international students together with annual International Foundation and Pre-master’s Programmes for people who would like to qualify for entry to undergrad and postgraduate university degrees in the UK within the humanities, social sciences and business-related studies. There is additionally a standard programme, ELAS, with an entry in September, January, and April, within which students will study modern world problems and intensive tutorial English for periods of 10, 20 or 30 weeks.

SOAS University of London Campuses

The school houses the Brunei Gallery, built from an endowment from the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, and inaugurated by Princess Royal, as Chancellor of the University of London, in 1995. Its facilities include exhibition space on three floors, a book shop, a lecture theatre, and conference and teaching facilities, sports, societies, events and student-led clubs. It is a short walk from many of London’s bars, cafes, and world-famous social and cultural sights. The university campus includes internationally recognized buildings like our Brunei Gallery, Japanese Rooftop Garden, and a UK top-five library facility.
