MSc Digital Video Production and Marketing

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Salford

Program Overview

The MA Digital Video Production and Marketing at Salford combines creative video‑making with marketing smarts — perfect if you want to build content and know how to sell it. Over one year, you’ll learn both the art of filmmaking and the strategy behind digital marketing and e‑commerce, preparing you to create video content that works for brands, platforms, or your own projects.

Curriculum Structure / What You Study

Blend of Theory + Practice

This course splits roughly evenly between practical production work and analytical/marketing studies — because in real-world digital media, content creation and marketing go hand in hand.

  • Social & Advertising Video Production (Trimester 1) — you’ll begin by interpreting client briefs, brainstorming creative ideas, pitching, and then producing content. Through hands-on work, you’ll build core skills in camera, sound and editing, and get to experience what it means to work on real video projects as director/producer or as part of a crew. Search & Social Media Marketing — this module teaches you how to design marketing strategies for social platforms: SEO/SEM, optimizing content, targeting audiences, analyzing engagement — crucial if you want your video to reach and resonate. It’s accredited by the industry‑recognized IDM (Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing).

  • Creation of Video for E‑commerce (Trimester 2) — here you produce campaigns for actual clients (past clients include brands/organisations like retailers and charities), combining filmmaking skills with marketing strategy: great experience if you want to work in advertising, brand‑content, or e‑commerce video.

  • Campaign Management & Digital Customer — these modules cover how to manage a full digital/video marketing campaign, customer behaviour online, sustainability/ethics in digital marketing, and how to shape campaigns for different audiences.

  • Final Project: Digital Video Production & Marketing in Practice (Trimester 3) — for your capstone, you’ll partner with a real company or mentor, respond to a real-world brief, produce video content, and analyze its performance (marketing analytics + creative effectiveness). This gives you a strong, portfolio-ready project, as well as real insight into working in digital media.

Learning & Assessment Mix

Expect a varied mix — practical video production work, written/analytical marketing assignments, group projects, real-world briefs, live‑industry collaborations and client feedback. The course is designed to mirror what you'd do in a real job: teamwork, creative pitching, production, marketing strategy, analytics

Facilities & Learning Environment

You’ll study at Salford’s MediaCity campus — using industry-leading facilities: TV studios, green‑screen studios, audio production and post‑production suites, editing suites, cameras, lighting kits, and more. These are the same kinds of facilities used by professional media companies.

Focus Areas

Digital video production, social & advertising video, e‑commerce video content, social media marketing, search marketing & SEO/SEM, campaign management, consumer digital behaviour, video analytics, client-based production, creative + marketing integration.

Learning Outcomes

By graduation, you’ll be able to:

  • Produce high‑quality digital video content optimized for marketing or e‑commerce.

  • Plan and manage digital marketing campaigns that use video effectively.

  • Understand the behaviour of digital audiences/customers and adjust marketing strategy accordingly.

  • Work to client briefs, produce content within constraints (budget, brief, format).

  • Build a professional portfolio showcasing both creative production and marketing‑oriented projects — which can help with roles in video production, content marketing, social media, brand management or freelance work.

Who It’s For

This MA is especially good if you:

  • Enjoy filmmaking/video creation and are interested in digital marketing, branding, or e‑commerce.

  • Want to work in media agencies, social‑video production, brand content, advertising, or e‑commerce content creation.

  • Are interested in combining creativity with business — making content that works not only artistically, but commercially.

  • Want both technical production skills and strategic marketing/analytics skills as part of your toolkit.

Career & Employability Potential

Graduates are well-positioned for roles like: video producer, content creator for digital media/e‑commerce, social media manager, digital marketer specializing in video content, brand-content producer, multimedia producer, or freelancer in digital video and marketing. According to the programme page, the demand for video-based content in e‑commerce and marketing is growing rapidly — so this qualification aims to tap directly into those opportunities.

Because you graduate with actual worked-through projects — campaigns, client briefs, videos + analytics — you’ll leave with a strong portfolio and practical experience, which tends to matter a lot when applying for real-world roles or freelance work.

Programme Details (Mode, Duration, Fees)

  • Full‑time.

  • Duration: 1 year. Location: MediaCity campus (Salford).

  • Entry: You’ll need a relevant undergraduate degree (often in media, marketing, or a related field) — but strong portfolios or relevant experience may also be considered.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme isn’t about dry theory alone — it mixes creativity, technical production, and marketing strategy so that by the end you’re capable of making digital video content that works for an audience and for business. You’ll be treated like a content‑creator in training: pitching, producing, editing, marketing, analysing — working with real briefs and understanding how video fits into commerce, branding, and communication.

You won’t just graduate with a degree — you’ll graduate with work you can show, and skills you can use.

What experiential learning looks like — what you’ll do, learn, build

  • Video production from brief to screen — In the first module (Social & Advertising Video Production) you learn to respond to a client brief: pitch ideas, shoot video, handle camera/sound/editing in “production‑craft” sessions, working both as a director/producer on your own projects and crew on others’.

  • Real marketing + analytics training — Alongside production, you’ll learn about social‑media marketing, search‑engine marketing, content optimisation, and how to use analytics to shape and evaluate campaigns.

  • Work on live briefs & real‑world clients — In the second term/module (Creation of Video for E‑commerce) you work on campaigns for actual brands/clients — from concept through video production to campaign launch. This builds real‑world portfolio work.

  • Campaign‑management skills & digital‑customer insight — You’ll also take modules on how digital customers behave, how to build marketing campaigns (considering audience, strategy, delivery), and how to produce content suited for social or e‑commerce contexts.

  • Final project = “real job simulation” — In your final trimester you’ll respond to a real-world brief (through placement or employer/mentor collaboration), produce the video content, implement marketing/distribution strategy, track analytics, and present your results to a panel of academic AND industry professionals — just like you would in a real industry role.

  • Access to industry‑grade facilities — The course is based at Salford’s MediaCity campus. You’ll use full‑scale TV/video studios, green‑screen facilities, audio‑post production studios, editing suites, cameras, lighting and grip kits, and professional‑standard editing/production software — the same used by real broadcasters and video agencies.

  • Collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork — Because producing video and running campaigns involves many roles (camera, editing, marketing, client liaison, analytics), you’ll work in teams — mimicking how actual production/marketing companies operate.

  • Blend of creative and analytical skill‑sets — The programme doesn’t only teach you to shoot nice videos — it trains you to think like a marketer and content strategist. That’s vital now when so much content is judged by engagement, reach, conversion, and audience insight. Portfolio & industry-ready output — By graduation you’ll have produced video content for real‑world briefs, a marketing campaign under your name, and a body of work that demonstrates both creative and commercial competence — a strong “calling card” for employers.

🎯 What this could mean for you — why this MA is a strong fit if you want to work in video, media or digital marketing

  • You’ll leave with tangible work — not just essays or projects, but real video campaigns and marketing‑driven content that you can show to employers or clients.

  • You’ll gain both creative production skills and marketing savvy — a rare combination: you know how to make a video look good and how to make it perform.

  • You’ll experience industry-standard workflows and equipment, so you’re ready from day one when you enter a media or marketing job.

  • You’ll practice project‑based, collaborative workflows — the teamwork, deadlines, client briefs, client collaboration — just like in the real world.

  • You’ll build a multi‑skill profile: video production, editing, marketing, analytics, social media strategy — making you flexible and employable across media, advertising, digital content, and e‑commerce sectors.

Progression & Future Opportunities

With an MA Digital Video Production and Marketing from Salford, you’ll graduate with a rare and valuable blend of video‑production skills, digital marketing knowledge, and analytics insight — making you ready for roles such as digital video producer, social‑media / content marketing manager, e‑commerce video/content strategist, multimedia content creator / brand‑video specialist, or digital marketing analyst / campaign manager. Because the programme integrates both creative production and marketing/analytics, you’ll be well‑equipped to operate at the intersection of media, advertising and commerce.

Here’s how this MA sets you up for success:

  • University Services & Industry‑Relevant Curriculum

    • The course is taught at Salford’s MediaCity campus — a major media hub — giving you access to industry‑standard facilities: TV and video studios, green‑screen and lighting, audio‑production suites, editing rooms, and full equipment stores (cameras, lighting, sound gear).

    • The curriculum mixes practical video production (shooting, editing, directing) with digital marketing/analytics, social‑media strategy, SEO/SEM, and e‑commerce‑video marketing — reflecting real‑world demands for content that not only looks good, but also sells.

    • In final trimester, students handle a live industry brief — producing and distributing content for real clients or companies, giving you first‑hand professional experience and a portfolio that directly mirrors industry work.

  • Career Outcomes & Industry Demand

    • Graduates are attractive to e‑commerce companies, digital agencies, social‑media firms, content‑creation studios, and media houses — especially as demand grows for video content for social, branding, advertising, and online commerce.

    • Roles you might secure: video/content producer, social media manager / content strategist, digital marketing executive, e‑commerce video coordinator, brand content creator, or campaign manager

    • Because the industry is shifting heavily toward video-driven advertising and digital content (especially for e‑commerce and social platforms), the skillset you gain is very contemporary and in high demand — giving you both creative and commercial flexibility. Long-Term Value & Versatility

    • The MA doesn’t lock you into a single “film‑only” path: you leave with hybrid expertise (video production + marketing + analytics), which makes you adaptable — useful in film/video production, marketing & advertising, digital media, online commerce, social content creation, or content strategy roles.

    • Your portfolio will include real‑world projects, video campaigns, and analytics‑informed work — a strong asset when applying for jobs, freelance contracts, or pitching to clients.

    • The exposure to both creative and business sides gives you the flexibility to move between different sectors: media production, marketing, advertising, e‑commerce, or even content entrepreneurship / freelance content creation.

  • Industry‑Connected Learning & Networking

    • Guest lectures and industry‑informed modules connect you with professionals working in social video, e‑commerce content, digital marketing, and media production — helping you build a relevant professional network as a student.

    • Working on live briefs gives you contacts with real companies — potential employers or clients after graduation.

  • Graduate Impact & Job Readiness

    • After graduation, you won’t just have a degree — you’ll have a work-ready portfolio of campaigns/videos plus marketing/analytics skills, which many employers find more tangible and relevant than a degree alone.

    • You’ll be ready for careers not only in traditional media, but also in the growing e-commerce, digital advertising, social‑media, and online‑content sectors — industries with ongoing growth and demand.

    • If you have entrepreneurial ambitions, the combination of production + marketing + analytics gives you a strong foundation to launch your own content agency, production house, or digital‑media startup.

Further Academic Progression:

If you decide to continue studying or specializing after this MA:

  • You could shift into a research‑based postgraduate qualification (MPhil / PhD) in areas like digital media, marketing communications, or media & culture — especially if you’re interested in studying media impact, consumer behaviour or digital content strategy at an academic level.

  • Alternatively, you could pursue specialist certifications or professional short courses — e.g., advanced digital marketing, data analytics, social‑media strategy, or immersive media/video marketing — to deepen a niche skill.

  • If you’re entrepreneurial, you could use your MA experience as a base to launch a content‑creation / digital marketing startup, or develop your own brand/agency using real‑world skills from the course.
